Well, I did a dumb thing and tried to replace the interior light switch in the door jamb of my GMC. While pulling out the switch, the connector broke loose and the wire dropped inside the jamb. I could hear it arcing inside the jamb so I pulled the fuse (post haste). I suspect there's no way to reach the lost wires, so I'd like to just cut and tape them off elsewhere. Can anyone tell me a good place to access them?

Actually it should be easy to reach the wires and to plug in another switch.
Just pull the trim from the rear of the window and you can remove the small vertical piece of wall board. The wire should be hanging down between the two pieces of aluminum framing and it should be easy to reach the wire.

Is this the same sending switch that lights the idiot bulb on the dash or is that a separate one?

I've never seen an interior light come on in my coach with the door open. What is it supposed to do?

I did find a "mystery bonus part" that fell on the floor from who knows where. It does look like it could be part of a sending switch but I have no idea how it could get under the table.

I think that is a ground wire so it's not actually hot. You may hear sparking since it's trying to complete the circuit to the overhead lights. If it doesn't bother you, you could just leave it and set the overhead lights in the middle (off) position. Most GM cars for years activated the dome lights by the ground circuit.

My 73 uses the switch to light the door open lamp and a foot lamp which I removed during a remodel.  I did tape the wires at the light.

Yes--that switch grounds the light circuit to the two lights above the driver and passengers seats. They won't light if the rockers are set in the middle or if your switches are corroded like most appear to be.

That must vary from year to year. When my door is opened it lights a
door open light on my dash if the key is on. If the key is off but in
the ignition it operates a buzzer on the dash when the door Is opened
to remind one that you left your keys in the ignition.

However no lights come on. I bought my GMC when it was just over two
years old so I know that there were never lights activated by that
switch

Well I have a 1974, the switch in the door not only turns on the idiot
light and buzzer on the dash, it also turns on the lights at the floor
level near the entree door and across the hall from the bathroom. The
headlight switch will turn on the lights above the driver and passengers
head, if the rocker switch is in the right position. You turn the
headlight switch in a CCW dirction. I have not seen them activated by
the door switch.

No, Bob

My lights have 3 positions. On, off and in the third position they are
controlled by the headlight switch when it is turned all the way to
one side. This is nice when I want to turn on the passenger side light
from the drivers seat. So we normally leave the switches in the third
position.
