The following reminded me about something I heard about the outside mirror
brackets. Are the nuts on the inside captive? Seems to me someone said that if
you remove the bolts the nuts will fall and they are difficult to get back in
place - or something like that. Is removing a mirror bracket difficult?

Someone once suggested to take the mirror bracket off and take it to a "real"
paint store. They should be able to whip up a batch of paint that should
match. Most stores should be able to load it into something that works very
much like a rattle can.

Also, I believe the 78's are different in that they have studs protruding. I'm not sure if they are on a stud plate and whether that plate is secured. That would be a nast surprise.

1. Gary was asking about the mirror mounting nuts. He was quoting a post of mine from another thread.
2. I believe that most coaches have nuts on the inside... how captive? Not sure. The last year or so they have studs sicking out of the body with nuts on the outside. My '78 has studs with nuts, the '77 has bolts.

My nuts were captive as well. But, a PO had run into something with the mirror which caused the mirror to partially pull on the fiberglass and damage it. I had to remove the inner panel on the drivers side to get to the backside with the captive nuts. A little fiberglass and reinforcement work solved the problem. But removing the panel also allowed me to discover that my floorboard was wet and rotted by a window leak. I dug out all the rotted plywood and fiberglassed it to prevent further rot (hopefully). but I still don't know where the leak was (is).

Paul,
Funny you should mention this! I have a set of RAMCO mirrors to put on The
Blue Streak, however, because they are wider than the OEM mirrors I have to
make them easily removable to park it in the position it needs to be in my
shop down here.
I took one off the other day and it has Rivnuts.
Here's the info out of the Parts Book:
Ref: Parts Book 78Z
Page: 23-80
Figure: 23.107 Mirror - Outside Rear View
Key: 9
Part Number: 2497229
Description: RIVNUT - bracket to side
The Rivnuts go through the plastic and into:
Key: 7
Part Number: 701405
Description: REINFORCEMENT - bracket (prior to Serial No. 6V100878)
Key: 7
Part Number: 2005983
Description: REINFORCEMENT - LH mirror (eff. w/Serial No 6V100878)
Key: 7
Part Number: 2006416
Description: REINFORCEMENT - RH mirror (eff. w/Serial No 6V100878)
Observations:
The Parts Book lists the bolts to be 3/8-16 x 7/8 but the ones I took out
were 5/16-18 x 1 1/4 stainless steel.
If you need to replace the rivet nuts you can get them here:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#rivet-nuts/=bmwwb4
I have used the ones that look like stubby Molly bolts to replace the ones
that are in the dash support that the master cylinder bracket bolts into.
Here's a picture of the tool I made to chinch them down:

Paul,
You're welcome and nope, putting the Caddy together is pretty low on the TTD
list for The Blue Streak. Lots of other stuff to do first.
