Has anyone here had trouble with rear brakes sticking after sitting for an extended period? I'm not suer if mine are, but is there any way short of taking them apart to unstick them? Where it's sitting now isn't a good place to re-do them, but if they are, I'll need to unstick them until I can move to concrete to take them apart. A elderly gentleman said that rapping the drum with a lead hammer around the outer drum outside the shoe area would work. He owned a wrecking yard many years ago...

I've never had that happen but have heard of it. Are you applying the handbrake when you store? Normally the rear shoes wouldn't be in contact with the drums unless something else is keeping them from retracting. Semi metallic brake shoes can cause them to stick if they aren't retracting due to an over adjusted parking brake or hydraulic hoses that are swelled inside. I would just try to move it and many time if they are stuck, you will hear a pop when they release. Otherwise I would drive it a short distance and feel the rear wheels in the hub area or if possible feel the drum through the wheel vent hole and see if they are hot.

Richard, it has been my experience with drum brakes that sit a long time
with the parking brake set, that the drums will rust slightly and the shoes
will adhere slightly to them. Usually rocking the vehicle back and forth
will release them. They run a few miles and polish the drums & are OK. A
problem of a more serious nature is that you might have a leaking wheel
cylinder and the brake fluid soaks into the brake shoe material causing it
to swell. The obvious fix for this is to pull the drums, and replace the
shoes and leaking cylinder, remembering that the rest of the wheel cylinders
are of the same age & probably need attending to also.

Sir: on the big trucks I used a 4 lb hammer. Easy to find the one stuck it will thud not ring. I always adjusted my brakes tight then backed them off 1 click at a time till they would ring.
