Spoke with Southland today about my frozen rear wheel bearing from last weekend. Unfortunately there isn't much to report. Zeb says the bearing had the correct seal, there was grease but of course it was badly discolored. Whether there was a contaminant before the freeze or the grease burned when the bearing froze is unknown. Basically there is no obvious answer for why I had a problem but he is checking my other wheels just in case.
Sorry folks, no smoking gun, just some bad luck seems to be the diagnosis.

Sounds like it may have been adjusted too tightly--not many possibilities left.

That would be my guess also, a little too tight, but what do I know. Two engines in one year and can't figure out just what happened, for sure. Stuff happens.
When our rear bearing went out, north of Dothan, we found there was very little grease and it did not appear to be leaking. Made no sense as all of the other three were fine. Funny thing about it was that Donny, at Applied, told me 9,000 miles earlier it was going to go out. I dismissed what he heard as tire tread roar.
So, I know nothing, just like Sgt. Shultz.
