HELP! I've tried to find it and all I come up with is articles on how to tow WITH a GMC. I know what the recommendations are on towing a GMC. I know it's on the net somewhere but I can't find it. I'm looking to move a GMC from Maryland to New Jersey over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. About 100 miles.

Are you going to use a tow truck? If the rear suspension is OK then all you need is the type of truck that lefts the front wheels off the ground. I once had mine towed over 100 miles from Jackson Hole to Idaho over the mountain that way - no problem.

Fated or 18 wheeler planted would be safest method for that distance. Don't

If you are talking of towing it with six wheels on the ground, You
have to disconnect the front axles from the final drive because it's
an automatic transmission. You can't have the axles just flopping
around so you have to seperate the inner axles from the outer axle.
The outer axles must be kept in the hubs to keep the hubs on the
vehicle.

So, for that short a trip I would suggest that you just either have
the whole motorhome loaded onto a flat bed tow truck OR, if the rear
wheels are operable, use a tow truck that puts a frame beneath the
front wheels and lifts them off the ground for towing. Tell the tow
company that the motorhome weighs about 12,000 pounds and that the
front weighs about 4,000 pounds. They will send the right size tow
truck. If towing with the front off the ground be sure to raise the
aurbags in the rear to keep the rear from dragging.

G'day,

Reference Maintenance Manual (MM) X-7725 Page 0-4 Towing Vehicle

TOWING:

Your vehicle may be towed on all six wheels, at speeds less than 35 mph
(56km/h), for distances up to 50 miles, provided the final drive, axle,
transmission, and steering system are otherwise normally operable. Use only
towing equipment specifically designed for this purpose following the
instructions of the towing equipment manufacturer. A separate safety chain
system must be used. For such towing the steering must be unlocked,
transmission in neutral, and the parking brake released. Attachments must be
to the engine front crossmember. Do not attach to bumpers or associated
brackets. Remember that power brakes and power steering assists will not be
available when the engine is inoperative.

Thanks - While I'm not going to have it towed 6 down, this is the type of info I'm looking for.

Knowing the weight of the front is helpful also as I know I need a truck that can lift it by the front tires.

The rear is operational so raising it is in the plan.

Tim

Engine runs well. It has no brakes as in the brake lines are gone and the exhaust system needs replacing.

towing - raise the front and move with the rear wheels on the ground. There are a few low clearance underpasses that would add many many miles. Only 10 miles is expressway. The rest is 2 lane roads.

My choice is to move it to my house as is or go there for a few days and fix the brakes and exhaust and drive it home.

Be sure to raise the rear by couple inches for clearance.
The front end will be around 4,500 at the front wheels.

>If you have more time then money fixing it would be your best option in my opinion . I would be willing to bet it will cost a $1000 or more to tow it if you don't have towing insurance.
Heck my neighbor just paid $75 to have a screw removed from his SOB rear tire.
