Hi folks. I'm in Boston and need a new wheel bearing and a bit of front end work. Can anyone recommend a mechanic in this region who has experience with GMCs? And, am I right in thinking that whoever changes a wheel bearing has to have a tool which is unique to our motorhomes...?

Thanks all

Richard

You will need a special puller for the ft wheel bearings. Check with the
Black List and see who has one you can borrow...they should also be able to
tell you who can do the work.
You don't tell me where you live, so I assume you live in the Boston area so
if you are at home, you can pull the two nub/knuckle assemblies and send
them to someone else for rebuilding..I'd suggest Dave Lenzi.
Others may come in with more info but this will get you thinking ...

G'day,

Here's a link to the LOCAL GMC SERVICE PROVIDER
RECOMMENDATIONS list on Billy Massey's website:

http://www.bdub.net/GMCServiceComments.pdf

As you can see the only ones listed in New England are in New Hampshire.

The closest REAL GMC specialist to Boston is Ken Frey; his contact details
are:

Frey's Automotive
1669 N. Old Bethlehem Pike
Quakertown, PA 18951
Tel: +1 (215) 536-1246
Email: freykjgmc@yahoo.com
http://www.kenlfreyautorepair.com/home

You are correct there is a special tool required to change the wheel
bearings.

Also IMHO you REALLY don't want to borrow a tool and bring it to someone who
has NEVER changed a set of GMC front wheel bearings, doing so is looking for
trouble.

Rob M.

Not unique to the GMC motorhome. The original tool was used for Olds
Tornado front bearings as well but is it hard to find a shop that has
the correct bearing puller.

Richard,
Check with Mike Glover, Plaistow, NH (Southeast corner of NH) He is about 50 miles away from Boston and has repaired GMC MHs for many years. His info can be found on the Black list. Good luck, enjoyed your blog.

Thanks Bill.
Mike has Harvey in his workshop even now. It was great to find
someone nearby who knows so much about them.

I like your vehicular lineup by the way. We had a '67 Stingray convertible ten years ago
and I wish we still did...

Best
