I am the new owner of a 73 Canyon Lands that has had a lot of upgrades done by the previous owner. Here is my latest issue.
You guys are a life saver!
I have a 73 with an airbag system that has been recently upgraded by the PO. It is leaking badly out of the opening shown in photo 2 shown by the red arrow. both sides leak from the same opening. You can see in photo 1 that the PO installed a shrader valve and small airvalve to keep air in the bags once inflated. If I open the valve (yellow handle in photo 1) air will rush out of the opening shown by the red arrow in photo 2.
Any help would be appreciated.

Rick,
That opening is the vent for the height control valves.
There are two other fittings on that valve, one goes to the air bag the
other goes to the Powerlevel panel in the dash board.

The reason why it leaks is probably the height is too high and you
have it on travel.

Dennis,
I have a set of JR's valves on Double Trouble and when I set them to "Lower"
the air is vented behind the dash, not at the valves.

Sir: the coach is suppose to about 1 1/2" lower in the rear with the valves set on travel. A shadetree adjustment is to park on a level surface and measure from the ground to the top of the "T" skirt. 33" I believe. I believe Jim K sets them with the center of the rear wheel the same height as the grease Zerks. The official measurement is 11 11/32 to the top of the race track hole in the frame behind the Onan.
To adjust the height, (with the air compressor satisfied and valves set on "travel") the arm on each leveling valve has a 7/16 wrench size nut over a slot. Loosen the nut just enough to move the lever. up is up down is down. There is a 20 second delay after the movement. Usually if I wast one to go uo I move it all the way up and measure as it raises and then move it back till it shuts off. You have to do both sides and will probably have to run back and forth a few times to get it even. Tighten the nuts before test driving and recheck..

Yes, the stock set up for 73 evacuates at the dash. The exhaust in the
wheel well is from the height control valve.

Sorry: should read loosen the nut just enough to move the NUT in the slot in the lever....

If you have air coming out of the leveling valves and are NOT in "travel" -- you have bad dash or leveling valve(s) or you have been major-ly "P.O.'ed."
Most likely you ARE in travel and the valves are set lower than you expect. (This might NOT be the same as being set to low!)
Check it out. (and the other items already mentioned.)
Let us know what you find and if it isn't working right... we'll go from there.
Are there any GMC'ers close enough to look over you coach with you and point out "the little things?" (I wish I had someone when I got my first one.)

Good point Mike, we all assumed he had dash leveling valves. Some rare coaches (like mine) do not have the dash valves and the leveling valve is hooked directly to the air bag. I can`t tell from his pics.. Wish I had had a mentor also... Maybe Mr Black should start a "Roger"List" for new owners...

Thanks for all the information! I set the dash (electro level II) in hold and no air leaks out. I set it in travel and no air leaks out. I set it in lower and there is a 1 second hissing noise at the dash valve (should it be hissing longer?). I set it in raise and air leaks out from the wheel well leveling valve.
There is a manual switch on the compressor that is turned off so the compressor does not run.
Really confused now...

I suspect if Rick has Powerlevel II -- it is the valve set up by JR Slaten.

It is even more confusing when the pictures show leveling valves that where only used with the Power-Level and Electro-Level(1)... not the Electro-Level 2. (I know this has been ID'ed as a Power-Level system with upgraded (PL-2) valves.)
I have one example of each system, but really haven't worked on the EL(1).

Rick,
When in lower you should have hissing at the dash valves until the coach has lowered all the way down. A word of caution, early coaches will rest with the the plastic wheel-wells on the top of the tires... damaging the wheel-wells. So block the boogies.
Where are you getting your air pressure if the compressor does not run?
Does the coach raise when you put it in raise? And when does the leveling valve start releasing air? (i.e. when the coach is still low, or when it gets above ride height?)
Rick D. had a good method of attacking problems with the Power-Level. It went something like this: Do the bags themselves hold air? Will the system hold air in the bags in HOLD? Will the system hold air in the bags in RAISE? ... ect.
His procedure is in this article.... reading it, then following the troubleshooting, should help you.
