i went all over town today trying to find ci-4 or SL oil. looks like the auto parts stores are only selling SN now. i used to buy Walmart ChemTech high mileage 10W40 that was SL rated but now it is SN too. truck stop only has Rotella diesel rated SN.

so what do we do now?

I run Mobil 1 in the GMC close to 15,000 miles on that engine, 1985 El
Camino 350 with flat tappet lifters and the Durango with roller tappets.
Yes I know its the "NEW" Mobil 1
Kendal in the 1950 with the 261 also a flat tappet engine.
All with Lucas brake-in additive added at each oil change.
Works for me.

G'day,

Below is a message I sent in last year; I confirmed that the links still

Subject: [GMCnet] ZDDP Additive Sources

G'day,

Here's some information on sources of ZDDP additives.

1) GM / Delco E.O.S.

Dosage: I can't find the dosage for a 5 quart oil change.

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?singlepart=1&partnumber=EOS

GM PART # EOS 88862586
OUR PRICE: $12.17
Cost per Ounce: $0.76

http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance/809/88862586/10002/-1

GM Performance #809-88862586
Cam & Lifter Pre-Lube
16OZ $17.99 = $1.12 per ounce

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-88862586/

Price: $17.95
Cost per ounce: $1.12

2) Delco EOS

http://www.acdelco.com/html/pi_vehcare_lub.htm

Click on down arrow next to Select and highlight E.O.S. Assembly Lubricant.

Part 10-106
12371532
E.O.S. Assembly Lubricant (1 pint)

.Is specially formulated as an engine assembly lubricant .Provides
protection against run-in wear and piston scuffing .Is not recommended for
use as an additive for engine oil

2) ZDDPlus

Dosage: 1 four ounce bottle per 5-6 quart oil change.

http://www.davidnavone.com/zddplus.htm

Single 4oz Bottle of ZDDPlus $9.95 = $2.48 per ounce Five - 4oz Bottle of
ZDDPlus $47.50 = $2.37 per ounce

3) SFR-100

Dosage: 1 ounce per quart.

I bought a gallon of this stuff last year after I got the following
information from them:

QUESTION 1): Does SFR 100 contain ZDDP?
RESPONSE: Normal motor oil when it contained ZDDP averaged 300 ppm. SFR when
added at 3% or 1 ounce per quart of motor oil averages over 900 ppm. There
is over 30,000 ppm in SFR 100 concentrate.

QUESTION 2): How much SFR 100 should I add to 5 quarts of oil to get
1200-1400 PPM of ZDDP in oil that does not contain any ZDDP?
RESPONSE: I would add 1 1/2 ounces per quart or the recommended dosage for
first time use and 1 ounce per quart of motor oil with each and every oil
change.

QUESTION 3) Can I add too much SFR 100?
RESPONSE: You can use up to 10% or 3 ounces per quart. After that it is not
economical based on testing that we have run. You will get outstanding
results by using 1 1/2 ounces of SFR per quart of motor oil the first time,
and 1 ounce per quart of motor oil subsequent oil changes.

http://www.sfrcorp.com/product/sfr-100-petroleum-oil-fortifier

Size / SKU / Price
1 Quart Bottle / S34005 / $34.70 = $1.08 per ounce
1 Gallon Bottle with 1 oz. Pump / S34003 / $107.90 = $0.84 per ounce
5 Gallon Pail with 1 oz. Pump / S34002 / $467.00 =$0.72 per ounce

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

I have 12 pint bottles of the original EOS ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT(GM P/N 1052367). If anyone needs it or is interested I'll bring it to Bean Station. If not I'll keep it. It's payed for so I'm in no hurry.
There is currently an ad for this on e-bay with a starting bid of $200 (US) for six bottles. It is not my ad. He also says that you use 1/2 pint of EOS with an oil change. Those are his words, not mine.

i thought i read here that someone had come out with an "old engine" oil with additives we need so we don't have to mess with adding stuff.

Joe Gibbs Racing (as in Joe Gibbs the football coach and NASCAR team Owner) market(notice I don't say make, I presume they don't have a refinery) a line of oils including some with enough ZDDP for flat tappet engines. I believe both dino oils and synthetics. Not exactly inexpensive at the Toronto "Hot Rod" store.

Fred,

Mobil-1's, 15W50 is the original flat tappet design that they brought back on the market after this ZDDP problem was brought to their attention by the Hot Rod community.

Mobile one is good but expensive at $7 plus per quart. I prefer and use Valvoline 20-50 VR-1 (code 211) has plenty of ZDDP ADDITIVE for pushrod flat tappet motors and is $4.49 quart at Autozone.

Nice idea Jim but, no local Wally's still stock 15-50. Even the NAPA warehouse has no stock.

Howard I check my local costco all the time for mobile one and have never seen the 15-50. They have all the modern oils such as 5-30 etc., but never 15-50.

Then its back to how much do you want to spend to save your engines?
If you have a $1.00 engine then buy a $1.00 can of oil.
Back to the old Bell Helmet storey $10.00 head?
Then buy a $10.00 helmet!
Look in the Sunday paper for saver coupons.
You may get lucky!

if you count all of the time and parts, and money that I have in my motor, $7/qt is a grain of sand on a beach. Thats $42 every 3K miles. If that's what I gotta pay to keep from doing another engine...especially off in the boondocks somewhere...NO CONTEST!! I run 20w50 Amzoil or 15w50 mobile one. Both have what we need. JWID

Larry,

I'm with you!

I bought Royal Purple SAE40W Synthetic for Double Trouble to see if it would
reduce the amount of oil it burns. It cost me about the same if not more. I
intend to change it at the end of our yearly tours which run 4-5 thousand
miles when Double Trouble goes into hibernation.
