My speedometer works great to 40 mph then it sort of stays at 40 as I continue to accelerate. Then all of the sudden it moves quickly to the actual speed. Any thoughts??

Thanks!

Mine is the other way, doesn't do anything until I hit about 20 and then because I have a 3.55 final drive gets progressively less accurate as I speed up. I did get it to work better by greasing the cable, but it didn't last long. Now I just use the GPS. Not completely accurate, but a darn site better than my 35 year old speedometer with the wrong calibration.

Thanks,

I have the 3.55 final drive as well. Could be the issue.

Mine stopped working below about 30 or so, and then was very jerky in movement. I pulled it out and put a couple of drops of oil in the mechanism, and that helped, so far, as the bearing for the needle itself was dry. But, it still isn't quite right. And, not that easy to get in and out, due to the little string that operates the PRNDL indicator, and having the electrical pins come off with the connector on the back.

Part of me is torn between trying to re-solder the connector pins, seeing if one of the Jim's have a used one in decent shape, since they do dash upgrades, or gritting the teeth and replacing all the gauges sooner than I planned. But I also use my GPS especially at night, since I no longer have the illumination working.

I'd guess it is the speedo head itself getting a bit worn or dry. If it jumps all the time it can be a dry cable or bad cruise transducer but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

You can disconnect the "string" at the other end by removing a screw on the steering column. I figured that out after I broke the "string" on my '78. (My indicator STILL doesn't work...) Crying or Very Sad

Mike,
Yep, the disconnecting part went okay. It's the fishing it back where it belongs and getting the screw back in that's a bit of the challenge. Would probably be easier if I had less mass and more patience.
