FWIW,
At $9.99 this might be a good wrench to carry for loosening and tightening wheel lug nuts on our coaches. On sale through tomorrow, Sunday March 13th.

What are the chances that a $10 torque wrench will be remotely accurate?
And at 18" it's pretty short for pulling 150#, too.

I have a nice torque wrench in the coach and if I need it when I'm home
I can always get it out of it's hidey-hole.

Just sayin'...

Kelvin,

This is a good point. I bought three Harbor Freight Torque wrenches (1/4"
drive, 3/8" drive, and 1/2" drive) on sale which I carry in Double Trouble.

I have Cc'd Ken Henderson on this email to ask him to bring his torque
wrench calibrator and we'll check all three and report to the group.

I have a couple of those HF torque wrenches around here. I checked them with my tester and they are all right on. I have found when testing various torque wrenches that they are right on or way off. If they are off we just adjust them back into spec.

We tested quite a few of them at one of the GMCMI rallies. The brand did not seem to make much difference on whether they were accurate or not. The FAA requires us to test and certify all torque wrenches. I think it is required annually. We always test them when we know the GADO is going to pay us a visit.

I had one of these "put my lights out" last year. Was trying to torque my driver's side Alcoa. The wrench snapped, my head hit the coach, then I found myself getting up out of the hedges and wondering where I was and how long I had been there. I was lucky, none of the neighbors saw this one, unlike the vdub running over me. Laughing

I guess sometimes you get lucky. I bought a cheap HF torque wrench about 12 years ago and checked it against my expensive one. It checked out accurate. I keep it in the motorhome. When I had to replace a cylinder head on the road 10 years ago it came in real handy.

David,

Sorry, IMHO that's a totally irrelevant comparison.

In fact that phrase is part of a Fram Oil filter marketing campaign!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fram_(oil_filter)

From what has been noted here and on the Internet generally Fram needs
catchy phrases like that to sell their filters, right Steve?

So far NO ONE has noted that a Harbor Freight (HF) torque wrench has been
INACCURATE.

Dan has noted he broke his, do you remember where / what broke on yours? Did
you return it for a new one? If yes, did you get it FOC?

Here's a comparison between the HF wrench and the Sears wrench.

SEARS:

PRICE:

HF = $34.99 - This is the "normal" price for this wrench.

Sears = $101.46 AUD (Note: the Sears website recognizes that I'm in
Australia and automatically converts the price to AUD.)

WARRANTY:

HARBOR FREIGHT: Lifetime (With Limitations - whatever that means!?)

SEARS: Not sure - The pdf file on SEARS warranties is not clear regarding
tools with moving parts. I skimmed the bad reviews and one owner noted it
was 90 days another noted 1 year.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

HARBOR FREIGHT:

Utilizing a heavy duty cam and pawl mechanism, this reversible 1/2" drive
click stop torque wrench is the go-to tool when precise torque is needed.
The click-stop design provides a torque range from 20 to 150 ft. lbs and is
accurate to within +/- 4%.

SEARS:

1/2 in. square drive Wrench measures 20 to 150 ft. lb. in 1 ft. lb.
increments. Superior internal mechanisms reduce friction and provide
accurate and consistent measurements.

Micrometer-type scales stamped into housing show torque settings in both
English and metric units. Accurate to + or - 4 percent on clockwise or
right-handed reading greater than or equal to 20 percent of capacity. Larger
ergonomic handle easily turns to set torque.

ACCURACY: Same

REVIEWS:

HARBOR FREIGHT:

Good Reviews = 31
Bad Reviews = 5 (Note: one of the owners reversed his review)

I'll shut up now and let you guys decide whether or not the $10.00 torque
wrench is worth $10.00.

All this aside, it's still an 18" long wrench. Have you torqued 48 lug
nuts with an 18" wrench?

I did it... once. I'm actually in pretty good shape and it's a task. I
bought a 22" long wrench that tops out at 200#. That's what resides in
the GMC. The 18" wrench in the garage toolbox works great on car-sized
stuff.

But I guess it would work in a pinch. Better than having nothing on board.

She was not talking to me Chuck.
I was using a 3 ft cheater when mine snapped and left me in the hedges. Lot easier with a cheater, to break it.

I do not think most torque wrenches will stand up to a 3' cheater bar. How much torque were you trying to apply to that bolt/nut?
