I my GMC with 16.5in wheels and was able to round up some 16in steel wheels from Mike Miller (Thanks Mike!). I put new tires on all around. The problem I found was that the 80mm calipers bind under the smaller wheels. Our original thought was to grind down the calipers to fit. In the mean time, I put back the 16.5's on the front. Today, I set out to fix this issue as the tires on the front are old and we have a trip coming up. I put the 16s on to see just how much I need to grind off. It's way too much! Never gonna fit.

So, probably need wheel spacers, new wheels, or 16.5 tires for the front. Looking for an economical solution as gas prices are already threatening our trip.

JimK sells the spacers at $375. Anything cheaper options? At that price I could buy two Eagle rims. Would those fit with 80mm calipers? Lastly, I could special order two 16.5 tires.

Any thoughts?

I think the Eagles will work. Someone will jump in here soon. That would be a better solution than the spacers, if you don't need them. We never needed spacers on our old frontend.

Pete, go to the photo site, on the title page click on search. In the box
marked name, type Jim Hupy, hit enter. You will see 16" wheels, hub
extenders, and 1/4" spacers which is all the additional space you will
normally require.

It might be cheapest and easiest to go back to 70mm calipers.

I thought that was the case Keith but not sure.
I have 2 of the Dodge wheels I got to try on my frontend. Wanted them to space the tires out even with the back ones to see if it drove any different. Since I got the new Hubler frontend I am going to sell the Dodge wheels, lugs, and caps. I have found that the wider spaced front end is not really any different, for me, than the factory spacing. I think it is all in having the frontend RIGHT.

Same here.

Is the problem because of the steel wheels?

Did you grind off the nub on the calipers when you originally installed them?

I thought the nub was on the side of the caliper that goes toward the hub and needs to be removed to install the caliper regardless of what wheels are used.

Mike,

It has been so long ago that I did this that I do not really remember. I put the 80mm calipers on when I had 16.5" steel wheels. Then a couple of years later I upgraded to 16" Eagle wheels and had no problem with clearance. I have never tried 16" steel wheels.

I'll see if I can find the pictures of the installation on the photo site. I know the pictures show the nub that needed to be ground off.

I have Eagles and the Hubler front end coming from JimK. I never thought about so I hope there are no clearance issues with this combination.

Jim, do you knoe of any issues with the Hubler and Eagle wheels?

thanks

I don't think you'll have a problem because of the new spacers,,,ie. wider track,,,,,PL

Dan & Paul,
Thanks for that good news.

You are welcome Bruce. You will love that Hubler. We will rack up several more miles on our's tomorrow. I saw our's as a good investment. It drives nice too.
