As I get closer to my departure date this Saturday, I'm checking the weather along the way and it seems that there is snow along my route from the Portland area to Texas. My route takes me through Boisie, Salt Lake and Albuquerquie. Can anyone out that way give me an update. I understand that chains are required but don't want to buy a set if I don't need them. My local tire store has to order the right size for my 16 inch wheels so buying them on the road if I need them is not an option. Nor do the tire stores refund your money if you don't use them, anymore.

Lance,

I have a set of cable chains that should work. While I would like them back, you could borrow them.

note: I have never used them on a GMC, but my son used them once on a S-10 Blazer.

It is probably too late now but keep your eye open for chains at garage sales Etc. I got chains for 4 of my vehicles including the GMC at a church rummage sale for $2 each set and 3 of them were still in the original wrapping.I hope I never have to chain up the GMC cause it would also mean chaining up the towed too.

What I have learned from the tire store is that hardened chains are needed because the coach is so heavy and cable chains are out. They will begin to shread right awayand may damage the tire and the coach. A very specific size of cam lock style hardened steel chains is what is recommended.

Once you get through Alb. you got it made. Maybe we will see you in Tx. Mon or Tues. Will be heading east through El Paso Monday morning. Weather has been great in the Southwest.
We have traveled your proposed route many times. Teri is from Vancouver and her mom lives there now. I only come there in July and August.

lance,

I would recommend checking road conditions with the state DOT offices for/on the dates that you plan to be in each. See if the road conditions favor a window of opportunity for you to make a run for it. Are you running M/S tires on your GMC? Have you ever driven your GMC in snow or ice (with or without chains)?
If not, I would hold up until the roads are clear and not become an unguided missile. Before I retired, I would stay home from work if the road conditions were bad. I can drive in those conditions but had been hit too many times by those who couldn't and were out of control. A day's delay is not worth a totaled coach.

Is there a reason your route goes across the mountains that far north? (ie: east THEN south) Could your route go south BEFORE going east?
