After years of desire, a few weeks of frustration, and more than a couple of "bumps" in the road, I can now count myself among the insanely wonderful people that own a GMC motorthome.
Believe it or not, it is the one I thought I already owned (long story). So now the project begins. It's raining here so I'm inside brain storming. First thing I am looking for is the couch. It had one at some time because the hardware in the ceiling is still there. So if anyone has one they would sell me please email me. I don't care about the condition, I'm mainly after the frame work.
Now if would only warm up a little and stop raining...

I read that as "wonderfully insane people"!

A word of caution, as far as remodeling, do not bite off too much.. at first. Try to do as little as possible to get the coach "usable" and USE it before making any BIG changes. ("Usable" does not mean pretty.) You would be amazed how many coaches got trashed by over ambitious new owners... who loose motivation before actually using the coach. Or how many make changes and find out later that the original set-up would have been better. There is a reason why some layouts where more popular... and more common now.

I am not sure how easy it will be to find a couch for an early 23 foot coach. IIRC: There wasn't very many early 23's with OEM couches. I KNOW that the "metal famed" furniture from later 26 foot GM upfitted coaches, isn't the same size as the OEM furniture in my 26 foot coach.

In other words... Good luck and measure well BEFORE paying shipping furniture!

Congratulations!

A couch in the 23 would have been a rare model I believe. Quite a few
owners have removed the bunk bed couch and hopefully someone has what
you want. I remember something about the danger of finger injury when
setting up the bunk so be careful!

Well congrats.
take your time and enjoy it.

there is a circuit on the alternator that needs an addition called an APC. I tried to look for it but the link on Dbubs site is still bad.

Someone will chime in, it is easy to put on , you can do it yourself and its only about $20 I think.

this device prevents your dash wiring from burning up if you don't already have it.

Open your motor compartment and look at the back of the alternator, it is a small "y" connector affair, red wires. If all the wires go direct to the alternator, you don't have it .

The is a picture on the site of what it looks like.

So glad you can share with your own GMC Motorhome and here, you are in good company...

Marsha: Welcome.... It sounds as if you are looking for a bunk bed with brackets in the ceiling? I don`t know if there are different sizes. Here is what it looks like in a 26` 1974.

Hey GMCers, Marsha asked me off net if any one could recommend a repair
facility in the greater Alburquirky, NM area that could be entrusted with a
GMC for maintence and repairs. Does any body have first hand knowledge of
someone that they would recommend
to her?

error comes up.

may not be your link dbub - If not I don't know whos it is but the link that I usually use is down.

sorry for any confusion

I was just trying to find the info for the APC for Marsh, the new GMC owner Very Happy ....

Honest, I don't know whos site has the bad link but I use it, or did, to go to the site.

If one of you can leave a link for the APC for her, that would work.

I wasn't aware there was different sizes of the sofa in the 23' vs 26', thanks for the info.
I want to put the sofa in because that was what was originally in the motorhome, and I think my boys would rather sleep in bunks than in just one bed. The dinette that someone put in is really to big and sticks out to far. I always start slow because I don't have tons of money to dump into a project. But I know the sofa might be a hard find, that's why I'm already on the hunt.
Today we got her to turn over, which is a start. Tomorrow is my husband's birthday, so I guess I will have to pay attention to him, so she may have to wait another day.

Just to make what I was saying clear...

With the idea of making a "Palm Desert," I test fitted some metal framed (Flex-steel) furniture from a 1976 Palm Beach (26 foot) in a 1973 Painted Desert (also 26 foot) that originally came with wood framed furniture. (like what came in your 23 foot coach.) Some seating would not fit without modifications to the cabinets. Note: There where some major changes to the GMC's with the 1975 model year... some less noticeable than others.

Any metal framed couch MIGHT be a different size... and MIGHT fit fine. Just measure before sinking too much money into shipping.

OBTW: I still have the 1976 Palm Beach furniture and most of the trim. (The dinette is a bit rough, but the rest isn't bad.) I would measure it for you but it would take most of a day to do so... the couch cushions are buried under several feet of other items in the back of my tool/storage shed.... my 26 foot 1973 ex-Painted Desert.

I am also of the opinion that the bunk beds are not a very good set-up. If you can find someone close, take your boys to a coach with one installed to "test fit" them.

My sons slept fairly well on the wooden dinette. (The later dinettes are narrower.) Just put their heads at different ends. We have found the dinette provides better seating when traveling than a couch. I also find the wooden framed dinette, with cushions, to be more comfortable to sleep on than metal framed furniture.

Finding sleeping arrangements in a 23 foot coach is a bit of an issue. If you have reclining seats, one option would be to have one sleep in the passenger seat -- rotate the boys sleeping spots each night. (We did that when the boys got older and we ended up with a smaller coach.)

Also, Someone came up with a way to fit a folding cot across the seats. I can not find the pictures, but I think they extended the center legs.

A third option: Ever thought of a small tent for the boys?

I was trying to get rid of the bunks, then the Grand Daughters went camping
with us:

Facebook - eugene fisher
http://goo.gl/S6J1l

they loved them, we all lived in the GMC for 3 days, in the rain, with
space
the dinette was always up, Looks like the bunks are going to stay in the
26.

I'm a pretty big guy, and I prefer the bunk for sleeping vs. the dinette. My '77 Kingsley 26' has the flexsteel furniture. With the dinette, I can feel every fold or joint in the folding seats, where the long, smooth surface of the bunks is more comfortable to me. I haven't slept in the back yet, as I've been to lazy to put a plug back there for my CPAP machine. It would have the same problem with joints as the dinette, though. Unfortunately, all of the sleeping areas are too darn short. People were literally shorter 35 years ago when they were designed than they are now.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. I appreciate all your advice and helpful comments as I'm sure I will be leaning on all of you for more of the same in time to come. I also will be looking into some of the "design flaws" to see if I think they warrant immediate change, or will be something I will put on my list for a future project.
I may be incorrect, but I do believe that it did originally have the sofa up front, where there is currently a dinette. What leads me to that feeling is hardware still mounted in the ceiling and a portion of hardware mounted to the wall. Also the sink is located by the door, and according to the floor plan options for the 23' if it was originally a dinette there the stove should be by the door.
I have read about the problem with pinching, and also the fix and hope to use the suggestion.
I have 5 boys (14, 15, 18, 20, and 22)! So someone is already sleeping on the floor if they all decide to go on a road trip with dear old mom. So extra sleeping surfaces is much desired. Tents are an option, if we are in a place they are allowed.
I know that a 23' is probably to small for my wants and needs but this particular was right place, right cost, kinda thing. I've had my eye on a '76 - 26' palm beach for three years now, but the current owner won't budge on the price, it needs at least as much work as this one and would have to be towed almost 300 miles. (And no, I don't know the VIN, just know where it was parked). It will also give me something to cut my teeth on while I discover the particulars of this wonderful old motorhome.

PS I wasn't me that asked about the shop in VA. I'm several thousand miles from there, so at this point a shop in VA won't do me much good.

Not disagreeing with your conclusion, just the method used to get there. I am assuming you are looking at:
<http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/faq/GMC23Interior.html>

The only 23 foot plan that has a "stove by the door" is a "Midas" interior. (I believe Midas built the "Crestmont" in 1975 and 1976.)

All 1973 and 1974 23 foot motorhomes where upfitted by GM* so would be one of four plans. (23-1 thru 4.) If your coach has the couch hardware (the hooks in the ceiling and the bracket on the wall) it is quite likely to be the 23-4 floor plan. I do not think there where very many of those made and I am not sure that the couch parts are the same as those in the 26 foot coaches... of the early or later types.

But keep in mind the amount of time and the number of hands that have had your coach. PO's (Previous Owners) could have done almost anything to your coach... for almost any reason!

Bottom line. It is your coach. You can do with it what you will. (Just like some PO's!)

*GM contracted the coach interiors to an outside vendor, I believe it was "Gemini" in 73-74.
