After I got the Pertronix working I had the Onan running for a while.

I assume that's called a "front cover" and that I'll need to pull it off and regasket it. Where does one get an Onan Front Cover gasket kit?

Did you check the tension (torque) of all the involved fasteners?
If no, then do that before you take anything apart.
It has been a while since I had my BF torn down to there and I think is was to replace the front seal. I just tapped out a replacement. The original was just flat paper. So, I just got some nitrile paper (having worked for a gasket company, I have some stock)I stuck it to the cover with RTV (IIRC). Any oil service gasket paper will work. If you have never used a small hammer to make a gasket, here is your chance to learn the skill.

That was one of the things covered in a small engines class I took as a freshman in high school. Good to know and I have used the concept on Onan generators and F-4 fighter jets!
I normally use REAL gasket material, but this video shows the idea:

Dan,
You are so right! Unfortunately it takes 20 or so years to figure out our dad's were a lot smarter than we thought. Glad I finally did, and payed lots of attention after that.
