Reading marc's saga at the Baltimore port got me curious about a diesel conversion
I searched the forum a bit and found it hard to find a discussion that covered what I'm interested in.
So what are the obstacles to bolting in a GM 6.2 litre?
What kind of mileage do people report with diesel conversions?
Can someone point me to a thread?

I understand it has been done, but the potential savings from increased mileage will not pay for the cost of the conversion in a reasonable time
Jim Bounds has a video of him driving a conversion, and I think Manny (of transmission fame) has one as well.

Marc told me that his engine cost him somewhere in the neighborhood of $5K. I imagine the self-engineering to install it was probably an additional $5K. I think that the Turbo is not a functional item, at this time. He only had the one on the passenger side installed. I would suspect for balance, you would need both sides connected, but I had no real knowledge on this issue.
Beautiful Installation, without raising the cockpit floor.
Marc called me about 5p.m. Eastern Time, and they were on the road without any apparent problems. He had traveled about 160 miles from Baltimore. They were heading out from I-95, via I-66, then South on I-81. He has bought a TracFone, so he will be able to call without the complications of an International Number. He was in a Wal-Mart and sounded pretty happy.
So, Watch for a Black and Silver/Grey 26' GMC high-balling it to New Mexico. He must be there on the 22nd.

Tom,
That's great news! I'm sure we'll hear from him over the next week or so as
he heads for New Mexico; to report how much fun he's having!

Maybe Marc will enlighten us as to his itinerary
and some of us along his route who have been his
remote cheering section will get to meet him and
his family and get a peek at the Diesel coach!
Interstate 40 is a VERY common route to NM! Judy
and I are quite familiar with it as our son and
his family live in the Albuquerque area, have
just moved to a new home, and want us to visit
as soon as they finish moving in and get settled.
Just about 525 miles west to ABQ then about 20
miles north to Placitas.

I believe the dog is a Keeshond or Dutch Barge Dog. Little hard to tell from the photo and it may not be a purebred but the face and fur look pretty close to me. Both my parents and my Aunt and Uncle had one when I was growing up. A very sweet tempered dog but I remember our own got very sick for a day or so after an airline flight. Seeing the picture made me wonder if it is an issue with the breed. I'm glad to see they are on their way. I'd love to see that engine install. I wonder if they will hit either ES or Bean Station this year.

Jeremy,
Good call on the dog! If it's a Dutch Barge Dog no wonder they get sick when
flying! ;-)
According to email traffic they have to be in New Mexico on the 22nd. I
assume that to be March 22nd and so I doubt they will make any of those
rallies.

I'm looking at that water pump shaft. What caused this?
Some speculation
1. Bad metal in the shaft
2. Too large of a fan for the shaft size
3. Fan / clutch assembly out of balance
4. Fan belt too tight causing side load on the shaft
5. Stuck ON fan clutch (I doubt this one)
I do not buy the frozen pump thing unless he did not have any antifreeze in it at all. I find hard to believe coming from the Netherlands. A 50/50 mix is good for something around -32 F. It has not been anywhere near that cold. That ship would have to been sailing OVER the ocean ice to see that kind of temps. Ocean salt water freezes at around +28 F.

You guys are UNBELIEVABLE thread hi-jackers.
it makes me laugh. I belong to other forums populated by much younger people and they get really testy when a thread drifts away from the original topic.
Here's it's more like guys in a bar, staying on topic is just not important.
Thanks for the link. Hublers instructions are pretty good.
I think my engine has a lot of miles left in it so I'm in no hurry. But if a good deal came along on diesel Suburban I might consider it.

I think this particular thread is ripe for hijacking for a couple reasons. 1) It's related to Mark's very interesting coach, his peculiar situation this week, and the incredible response the GMCNet provided. 2) Installing an alternative powerplants for the GMC has just become a played out issue. We all know there are a variety of options, we also all know none of them make any kind of economic sense unless you are planning to do it yourself and put a lot of miles on your coach.
We are all interested in seeing what other people have done and admiring their guts and ingenuity, but simply rehashing whether something can or should be done gets tiresome when you already have the answer.

What's a reasonable amount of time? or money?
According to BIll Hubler, in 2001 it cost about $8K with new parts and about $5000 with a low mileage donor.
And he got 15 mpg.
If you could get from 9 mpg to 15 mpg for $6,000
If gas is at $4/gal and diesel is at $4.5 it will pay for itself in 60,000 miles.
The higher gas goes up the faster it pays for itself.
Anything wrong with my math?
How many miles are most people driving in the average year?

Dave,
Double Trouble sees 4-5000 miles a year.
The cost estimates I have seen are for do it yourselfers none of them have
included anything for labor.
IIRC Miguel noted to R&R an engine he charged around $3000. Dan just paid
John the same amount.
If you can't do it yourself the number goes to $9,000 and the miles goes to
90,000.
Asking what's a reasonable number isn't really realistic, it depends on ones
financial situation.
