Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do with this 'thing' that
someone gave me this afternoon?

It's a Red-Line generator DA12A-500A

If you go here: http://www.rediline.com/
and look around, there is more info, and it saves me the trouble of typing a
number of words about the 'thing' which I know nothing about. The
"Installation Guide" gives a lot of information...I think <g>

So what can I do with it...does it have Any application on my GMC??

Thanks folks

MIke,

That device will do the same thing a $30 inverter will do while occupying
several times the space and weighing 26 pounds instead of maybe 2-3. It
will be noisier because it's really a DC motor turning an ac generator
rather than being an all electronic device. It will, however, provide nice,
clean, pure sine wave power. It's not big enough to drive a microwave, but
if you want a nice clean TV picture, it should not interfere.

I personally wouldn't waste time finding room for it in my GMC.

It is an electro-mechanical inverter. Does the same thing as an electronic inverter. It is a DC motor, AC generator combination. However it does put out a pure sine wave and has a good overload rating. It probably might have better resistance to transient voltages and loads.

For free it is a good thing to have. I would suggest you not install it on your GMC. Send it to me and I will properly dispose of it.

Now I can quit scratching my head and wondering why this thing is so "great"
and thinking that 500 watts is "commercial power". Marketing hype looking
for a sucker.

So, if you need to run a 1/4-inch drill off and on for 15 minutes from your
pickup truck, go for it. Otherwise, it seems like 1940's technology.

Other than the electronic starting circuit it is most assuredly pre 1940's tech. I suspect the main market for this is for those that have had some kind of problem with an electronic inverter such as failures, waveform problems, or just don't understand how they can work and want some good ole fashion iron solution to the problem.

Michael,
It's a motor inverter- 12vdc to 120vac- for the MH, power tools in the field. If your not on shore power or gen, this can provide another way to have a limited amount of 120vac power.

It's not as quiet, it's heavier, and bulkier then the solid state inverter are, and I don't think it's as efficient, the loss to run the motor.

I'm sure that other with more expertise in this type of inverter will chime in with better info then I can.

Gentlemen

Thank you for your advice, but I have decided to use it as a paper weight to
hold down the receipts for my recent interior renovation of my Kingsley!

Mike,

I guess you're thinking it's heavy enough to make 'em smaller, huh?

As others have stated it is an MG (Motor Generator) set. I worked one lot of them in a previous life as an electrician in the steel mills. I have never seen one that small except in the old Motorola 80-D tube type 2 way radios. They had one inside the radio that came up to speed every time you pressed the transmit button. That one supplied the high voltage for the transmitting tubes.

The one you have probably draws 45 to 50 amps at 12 volts DC to put out 500 watts at 120 volt AC. I do not know what it's efficiency is. It probably is press good. A good indication of it's efficiency would be to check to see how warm it gets in use. Modern inverters are also not all that efficient.

It should put out nice clean sine waves. On some of the ones I use to work on we climbed inside them once a week to clean the insulators and check the brushes on the slip rings.

What the guys all said is true. It's benefit is clean power, as some inverters put out a "modified sine wave" which is not good for motors, and other electronic stuff. They show it being used with a power drill. good use for it... It really belongs on a maintenance truck.

We use much larger ones in the semi industry to isolate power sources. Those use a fiberglass drive shaft to isolate high energy ion sources.

I does have a use but it is not really something that most people need in their GMC. (If you where one who could use it, you would already know.)

I would put it on Craigslist or something. Someone who NEEDS really good clean AC power from battery power will love to have it. Many motors, some radios and the like.

Might there be some application for the motor? Seems like a 3/4 hp 12 motor might be useful, maybe to run a hydraulic pump ?
