I am beginning the project of replacing the body pads on my '76. I am going to begin by soaking the bolts with penetrating fluid over the next few days. Is there a consensus on which is the most effective fluid?

A lot of folks swear by Kroil, but there was an "independent" article posted that indicated a 50/50 mix of trans fluid and acetone was the best.

Those are my 2 faves or the other route is the 'Freeze the heck out of it approach' with spray of CRC Freeze-Off if you are in a hurry.

I've never had the greatest luck with just penetrating oil. On the GMC, I soaked my front suspension bolts with the stuff for days to no avail.
For my 37 year old rusted bolts I roast them with a torch and hit them with the impact. They come apart every time.
My uncle who is a pipefitter swears by the freeze/penetrating oil method. Either way you are using a temperature change to help break the bond the rust has on the metal.
Considering you will be working by the fuel tank I'd use the freeze method instead of waving a torch around the tanks.

The most effective combination for removing rusted bolts/nuts is a mixture of acetylene and oxygen properly mixed and applied. However I will not use this on the GMC. (GRIN)
I have had very good luck with KROIL. I am experimenting with the acetone and ATF combination. So far it seems effective but the jury is still out. Right now I have been applying the mix to ONAN exhaust bolts. I think that will be a good test.

First,
I have been successful at replacing the pads without loosening the vertical tie down bolts. If your coach had the thick pads originally then you probably can get by without pulling the vertical bolts.
If you do decide that you have to remove the vertical bolts keep in mind that that bolt heads are the carriage type and are seated in wood. If you turn the nuts too much then the bolts will just spin. You can not get to the heads without removing the carpeting / floor and sometime seats and other accessories.
Soak them daily for 5 days with Kroil.
Jack up on the body aluminum cross member closest to the bolt you want to loosen. This will put additional stress on the head of the bolt in the floor.
Start a fresh nut on the bolt and run it up and down several times to clean out all of the threads.
Put an off set box wrench on the original nut. Install a double nut on the bolt. Put a second wrench on the double nut to hold the bolt. Then turn the off set box wrench to break the nut loose. Remove the nut.
I have also successfully used a 3/8" battery powered impact with a deep well socket but if you are not careful you can spin the bolt in the floor this way. Believe me, I have done it.
On Blaine's coach, with thin pads, in order to get clearance to install thick ones we loosened the horizontal bolts that held the bracket to the frame. We took only one bolt out of each bracket and were able to install the pads. Then we took a centering tool and pulled the bracket into place by sticking the tool through the hole while tightening the other bolt. Finally we inserted the second bolt and tightened it.
I think you have thick pads and should be able to get by without doing all of this.

Thanks everyone...Looks like I will use Kroil if I can find it, if not the PB Blaster is available at my HD.
I am looking forward to crawling underneath and starting this project!
