poppycock with a bit of rubbish thrown in.

Nicely done! That's a fantastic response.
We actually got warned about this scam at work (I work for a financial services company) about 2 years ago. Apparently several of our customers sent large wire transfers in order to "help". Our bank was involved because they knew where the money went after it left the accounts. Not sure it was ever recovered. Be careful folks.

Most of the time these scammers want one to send funds by using Western Union.
That is not traceable and not recoverable.
So if anyone wants you to use Western Union you can be sure its a scam.

I don't believe password has anything to do with it.
I'm not an expert but I believe these things work by exploit vulnerabilities across programs.
All your Microsoft products talk to each other. That makes a lot of things work really well.
It also makes the system vulnerable.
Something you click on in MS Internet Explorer gets permission from the operating system (MS Windoze) to look at your address book in MS Outlook.
Then is sends emails that appear from your friends.
I never have these problems. I use simple passwords on everything and I do everything online (banking, shopping, taxes) and I rarely change passwords.
I use Linux, Netscape (firefox) and Gmail.
I also do not let teenagers use my computer.
The hip, trendy, busy, pop sites tend to be magnets for this sort of stuff (ask me how i know)
I also keep a couple of decoy emails to leave on web forms when I'm not sure "spam@davesilva.com"

Phishing schemes also feed this scam. The victim gets an email saying
that they need to log in to their account due to "suspicious activity" and
conveniently provide a link. The link leads to a fake server and they
harvest the login info giving them access to the contact list.
I recently got one of these at work "from" a former co-workers wife saying
that they had been mugged in Madrid(a common variation of the "stranded in
London" scam). I was fairly sure that they were not out of the country
and confirmed that fact with him by using his email address.
Use some common sense. If you know someone well enough to wire them
money(or even for them to ask), then you know some way to verify the story
other than by responding to the email. A quick phone call to family or
close friend will confirm whether they really are in London(or Madrid).

As someone else mentioned, Windows Internet Explorer, Outlook, etc. are full of security problems.
Microsoft has many issues, I avoid their products.

A side story along this line. I got a phone call from my credit card company Tuesday afternoon. They asked if I had charged $48.00 at Pilot at 6:30 that morning. I said no and they took it off of my bill, closed my account, and had new credit cards delivered first thing this morning.
This was the only bogus charge on my account and I wondered how they found it so fast. 1. They stated that I never buy gas from Pilot. 2. The credit card attempted to buy gas again within two hours and was refused. 3. The the user attempted to use it again with a second refusal.
The pump told the user to see the cashier and they did not do it. The cashier is suppose to verify the card and the user with an id. I have had that refusal happen to me in the past but never realized why. Now I know. I understand they are looking for similar charges within a two hour time frame.
It is always something.

One other scam going around is a phone call from a relative.
Happened to my Father in Law;
His "grandson",my son, called and said he had been in a minor accident in Canada, and needed some money as everything of his was in his (impounded) car. Long story short he went to Walmart to WU money, and the ladies at the counter convinced him it was a scam.
The honest have to be thinking all the time, because the dis-honest sure are.
