Are we out of luck? We've got a 455 that we
have put 10K miles on. It runs very well and
and isn't noisy at all. It has only 27 psi
warm going down the road. 50 psi starting
and 18 idling. We've driven it all over and
it hasn't changed since we bought it. We run
Mobil 1 15w50 full syn. in it. Should we be
worried? After reading some of the other
posts I'm concerned.
about it?

Sir: you might want to install a good manual oil pressure gauge and compare readings.

I'll give a real example of why a GOOD mechanical guage should be used before "assuming" anything about oil pressure. I have a 1976 SOB, yes it is 26' long and has an American iron big block(not quite a 455) The stock electric guage has always since I've had the MH read about 1/4 up the non numbered scale. Being the "know it all" I sometimes tend to be, I decided to slightly shim the oil pressure relief spring. The pump is external on my engine. I added small washers about equal to the thickness of a penny (in total) under the spring. The weather was reasonable. I started the engine and the guage read slightly higher so I revved it up a bit. (probably 2500 RPM)
At this point my son who was in front of the MH starts to frantically wave his arms, so I shut off the engine. Oil all over the place and the base plate of the filter was bowed out.
(yeah, it was an orange filter)
So I took out the shims and got a real guage. 80 PSI at cold slow idle, 40 PSI at hot idle and 60 PSI going down the road. Now I NEVER look at the stock oil pressure guage.

Where's the best place to connect the guage to engine?

Put a Tee in where the OEM sender goes.

Yes, this is Dan's engine and yes, I brought the following to his attention.
If you need to extend the nipple that screws into the engine block DO NOT
USE ONE MADE OF BRASS get one made of steel! Someone reported that they had
a brass on crack and/or break.
The nipple has 1/8" pipe threads.

Also, do not use the nylon oil pressure line which is commonly supplied. On a SOB with a 454 chev, there was a nylon line to the oil pressure gauge a PO had installed. One day I broke a fan belt, and the flying belt pieces took out the nylon line, resulting in a high pressure oil leak. I could drive without the alternator belt, but the oil line almost lost me the engine as there were no pullouts and no shoulder at all.
Even with a copper line, I would cover it with some plastic tubing to guard against chaffing and do careful routing, with lots of tie downs.

Rob,
Good point!
I am sitting at my desk in Sydney and can't look at The Blue Streak to
provide the exact routing but I protected the nylon line of the oil pressure
gage installed in Double Trouble by tie wrapping it to the left radiator
shroud support and to the top of the upper radiator hose.
Whether or not it would work if you broke a fan belt I can't say but at
least the line wasn't hanging out in the middle of nowhere.

Rob M.
