I think we need a new category on the forum for Freak Events because this one cerainly is.

A metal valve stem broke on my Alcoa wheel, blowing out the schraeder valve so all air was lost. Fortnately, the coach was parked inside my shop. I was checking air pressure in the tire which appeared low.

A replacement valve has not been found here in Houston, nor did Southwest Wheel from which I purchased the wheels(sorry JimK, I had not known of you in 2003 when I bought the wheels) have any in stock.

A call to Alcoa(800-242-9898) resulted in a referral to Haltec (800-321-6471) for retail sales. Haltec is shipping me several valve stems, part no. TR-543 at $3.97 each.

It doesn't take much thought to think of how disastrous this could have been had I been driving. Check you valve stems carefully with a magnifier just to be sure you are safe.
Thx, Michael at GEMRECS

Michael,

If you had published this before you started looking for the valves John
Sharpe or I could have directed you to:

Meyer Tire Supply
Houston Distribution Center
2210 Edwards St
Houston TX, 77007
Phone: 713-868-7035
Toll free: 800-833-0127
Fax: 713-868-7018

They are 7.5 miles / 15 minutes from your shop on Palestine.

We would have suggested you purchase TR-553 valve stems NOT the TR-543. The
filtered Schrader valve that is supplied by Equal with their balancing
powder will not fit in the TR-543.

Regards,
Rob M.

I got my valves locally at Pep Boys. They had them sitting at the check out counter near the register. They had both the Eagle and Alcoa diameters in several different lengths. Some had bends in the stems.

Different problem, but it reminded me of this old one:

"wondering how many are still for sale?"
