A list of problems and solutions I worked on this winter:

one headlight not working -- bad wire connection
dash ac/heat not blowing -- bad wire connections
map lights not working -- bad wire connections
plug not working -- bad wire connections
interior generator starter not working -- bad wire connections
fridge not working on 12 volts -- bad wire connections
generator not providing electricity when in compartment -- bad wire connection

on a 35 year old vehicle, is anyone surprised that I've been struggling with bad wire connections??? a lot of work to track them down, but simple fixes for all once I had it. I think I know what I'll look for first from here on out...

interior generator starter not working -- bad wire connections

I am guessing it was the very hard to get to connector waaaaay in back of the gen compartment.

I can't start from the inside and I am betting it is that connector. I have to remove the genset to get to it so that won't happen soon. I don't have the equipment for that kind of removal.

Yep. Fortunately I already had it out because the wire running from the genset to the house was also loose. Two birds with 1 stone. Of course, I also found some connection behind the remote starter that someone had added, and that was also loose. Amazing it worked at all for as long as it did.

Don't remove the Onan to get at the connector. It can be reached from below if you put you two right rear wheels on blocks and crawl underneath. I went under and cut the connector out some years back. I slid some heat shrink tubing on each wire and then soldered them together in place of the connector and haven't had any problem for years now.

If you can't reach it find another GMCer that can. if you are coming to the GMCMI convention at Patterson, LA one of use could help you with it.

Emory, do you have to remove a panel??

The gen box seems to be solid.

I thought I had looked at all avenues to reach that connector, did not really think of this one. But I did look at the box the gen is in. I don't recall seeing any access opening other than where the gen slides in and out.

When it warms up a bit, I'll take another look. if I find I can access it, that connector is history.

thanks Emory

The connector is not in the box. It is behind it. The back of the box just has a low panel. To get to the connector just jack up the right rear of the GMC and put the wheels onto blocks or jack stands under the frame as you will be crawling under. If you shine a flash light behind the pulled out Onan at the far rear you will see the wires going toward the connector. If I remember right there are four wires to the connector. You should be able to see them without jacking up the GMC but you won't have room to go under and reach up until you raise the GMC.

Once you get to it the easy replacement is a four wire trailer plug, cheap at twice the price, of course, gold plated would be better. In my case I could get there from above in the bedroom. (Rotten boards)

Yes, but that will eventually corrode from the road salt and water thrown up into that area. If you solder the wires together with heat shrink tubing protecting the connections then it should be maintenance free. If you ever have to take out the Onan just cut the wires and resolder them when you put it back in.

Unless I am wrong, That connector is in the box BEHIND the genset. I can see it, I can't reach it. It is the Wire cable to the remote start, the colors match and the connectors on the board match the drawing. It is in a really bad place. That is why I commented on this. I can understand why they fail if they are outside the box, water, mud, road salt will eat em up. But this one is inside, I am sure of it unless someone knows this to be for something else. I am open to comments of course.

thanks for the thoughts, I am getting a lot to look for.
