I know we have some here who will not like this not truly gmc related email; sorry about that.
It saddens me to email about Scott Adam, 70, and his wife Jean who were two of the victims in this week's pirate incident in the Arabian Sea. Jean was a retired dentist with an interest in biology and Scott had ties to the entertainment industry. They were both radio enthusiasts (K9ESO and KF6RVB) and world travelers who were sailing around the world on their 58-foot yacht on a mission to deliver religious material to exotic locations.
(Bet they would have wished they had a GMC too.)
Their ship was hijacked by Somali pirates last Friday, and they were killed in a shoot-out on Tuesday. You can read more about the circumstances here. There are a lot of questions about the attack. You can read more about the couple and their adventures here.
What really saddens me is that these things are even happening. I am sure you have heard the Marine anthem's "from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli." Well, while Tripoli is in the news today because of Kadhafi, it is in that song commemorating their involvement in the Barbary wars against pirates of Libya. The Barbary Wars (or Tripolitan Wars) were two wars between the United States of America and the Barbary States of North Africa in the early 19th century. (1801-1805 & 1815) At issue was the Barbary pirates' demand of tribute from American merchant vessels in the Mediterranean Sea. American naval power attacked the pirate cities and extracted concessions of fair passage from their rulers.
These punitive actions against the Barbary States were launched by the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. When they proved successful, partisans of the Democratic-Republicans (notice the name of the party - learn a little ) contrasted their administrations' refusal to buy off the pirates with the failure of the preceding federalist administration to live up to their rhetoric, "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute,"
Do you think we have any politicians today who will even say such a thing, much less take such actions. We need more men like those, less like what we have.

Jess, if they were close friends of yours perhaps you could help me to
understand why they would sail those waters in the 1st place. They had to
be aware of the danger.

Simple, they were Christians on a Christian mission to deliver bibles to
those in need of one. Has been so since the days of the Romans. Many lost
their lives in that pursuit down through the ages. Takes dedication and
bravery. I am saddened that more is not being done to rid that region of
pirates. We have the resources, what we lack is the will.

Guys...a big part of the problem is that the somalia coastline
is comperable to that of the eastern seaboard of the U.S.
Add to that, there is NO OIL involved here.
One must admire there Christian dedication.

What is really quite disturbing is that these Somali pirates hijacked the
vessel within range of US ships. That takes a lot of guts or absolute
stupidity. Speculation is that the large group of pirates, who boarded the
vessel, began to disagree about the situation when the US ship came within
visual sight. They panicked and began fighting among themselves.

What the truth is we may learn later.

I do agree that it is a tragedy that we, and other countries with vessels
that sail those waters, standby and let the bullies do what they may. These
pirates, on the other hand, think they are being modern-day Robin Hoods. In
some respects they are. However, the crimes committed do not justify the
actions of doing something to survive.

The loss of lives of four, innocent people engaged on a small vessel that
wasn't carrying anything of commercial value is ridiculous. The only thing I
can say in defense is that Somalia is a large thorn in our flesh and no one
in Washington has the political will to do anything about it. Instead,
they'll quibble about other things that brings them 15 minutes of glory in
front of TV cameras and the electorate.

I agree this is a story that is both disgusting and heart-wrenching at the
same time and I am totally incapable of discussing it in a calm manner.

The international issues that gave rise to it are also not solvable within
this forum and it is off-topic. Let's please move on.
