Gene F and others,

I followed your advise and got a couple of Linksys # WRE54G units
from Amazon to improve my WiFi signal.

It came with a disc but no instructions. Seems to me you said
I do not need to install the disc to use this system.

Really hate to add more 'bloat-ware' to my computer
but the big red warning sticker says 'Run CD First before connection cables'.

I'm thinking its BS but...

Hey;

If you are taking it new out of the box, and if you are NOT using
security, just power-up the unit, hold it close to your router, and
hit the AutoConfig button on the side. There will be some blue and red
blinking lights for a moment, then both should turn blue. Give it a
try.

I'm pretty sure that there is a "manual" on the disc.

What if any security are you using? No security would be easiest After you get it going you could turn on the security again if desired.

Are you trying to connect to one of these compatible routers?
http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=17831

I set up a couple of those a few years ago and I do not remember much of a problem. As I remember I simply signed on to address 192.168.1.240. No userid, password is admin.

If the password does not work read this:

http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=5602%20&donelr=1

From there I could configure whatever was needed to make it compatible with the network.

Here is where you can get the manuals if you need them:

Interesting read on this post to the Cisco community. Configuring repeaters
for access points (creating a wireless infrastructure) isn't for the casual
novice.

The SSID is the same so you can "roam" from the repeater to the main
wireless access point.

What's really funny is that the guy's new Acer probably has an N radio in it
and he's configuring wireless access for B/G speeds. That means he's forcing
his laptop (which could negotiate a faster connection) to go at a slower
speed. He also has a desktop connecting vie a wired connection. If he does
much transferring of files between the laptop and the desktop he can expect
some wait time since he's at a slower speed. Of course, he may be like a pig
in a mud hole and happy as can be that he even has access wirelessly.

One thing about wireless that I've noticed changing over the last few years
-- a lot of open networks have gone to closed networks. That's a good thing
for security reasons.

Another thing about wireless is that everyone seems to have it up and
running. In a more densely populated area it becomes a bit of a problem as
there gets to be a lot of channel interference, etc. I wish my neighbors
were smart enough to agree for us to get together and work out a plan so we
can all have wireless access without bumping into each other.

Found this; looks like even I could try these steps!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Bottomline: "Wireless setup" of the WRT54G only works if your wireless network is completely unsecured. If secured you will always get "Failed Site Survey"

Most folks have WPA or WEP active, so you MUST use the ethernet plug on the WRT54G and directly plug it into the wireless router you wish to expand in order to properly config the WRT54G. Once config is done, then you can unplug and relocate the WRT54G.

Here's how to config the WRT54G in a secured wireless environment:

1) plug WRT54G into back of your wireless router using standard ethernet cable

2) on a laptop already wirelessly connected to the network, run the setup.exe on the WRT54G CD-ROM

3) site survey will pass and you will now be able to config the WRT54G using their quick tool.

4) of course you can also IP directly into the WRT54G using 192.168.1.240, but again this only works if direct connected to the router via ethernet.

5) finish matching security setting to your existing wireless network and SAVE them to the WRT54G. You now unplug and relocated the WRT54G freely about the cabin.... :smileywink:

Hope this save everyone time. It took me many hours and many configurations to figure this out. Cisco should up the manual.
