I have an old Carefree awning that does not have a metal sun protector like the Zip Dee; consequently, the first one foot of the awning fabric is severly faded by constant exposure to the sun. Other than that the awning is in very good condition.

Does anyone have any sugestions about how to re-color the faded area?

Is there a paint or dye product that can be used to restore the color?

Thanks for suggestions

At the big tent in Quartsite they were selling a plastic cap that snapped over the awning when it was rolled up to protect the awning material from damage caused by the elements. It cost around $100.

Roy,

Any idea where I can get information about that cover or where I can buy one? That may be easier than trying to re-color the fabric.

I wonder if the cover is a PIA to remove and replace each time you deploy the awning.

Gene, I just looked at the Carefree website yesterday, so you may want to
check it out.

Bob changed out our ZipDee with help from two other GMCers. He said it
wasn't a bad job. Don't know about how different Carefree might be.

Sandra,
Thanks for the response but, I don't want to replace the awning or the fabric. It is in good shape except for that faded area.
It only shows when the awning is rolled up. Which is 90% of the time. I jmust want to make it look better inexpensively.

I am not sure, but think that Krylon Fusion paint will work on fabric. Don't go on my memory though. Has anyone used it on fabric outside?

How about interior plastic, fabric & carpet dyes that trim shops use. Check with an auto trim shop or auto suppliers. Might mask off & spray the different colours.

Even if the Zip Dee didn't have the metal on it the fabric still would not fade like the Carefree does. It is a fabric called Sunbrella and it seems to be pretty much totally resistant to fading.

There is a fabric made especially for roller sails that are left exposed to
the light... just like our awnings. One of the most used materials is
Insignia. The 10 inch wide would probably do it for your application.
$4.60 a linear yard... probably cheaper than any paint and is actually
designed for this purpose.

http://www.sailrite.com/Insignia-Adhesive-Backed-UV-Dacron-10
http://www.sailrite.com/Insignia-Adhesive-Backed-UV-Dacron-14
http://www.sailrite.com/Insignia-Adhesive-Backed-UV-Dacron-18

There is a video on how to install on a sail. The awning install will be
much simpler as it doesn't have curvature.
http://www.sailrite.com/Installing-a-Suncover-Using-UV-Insignia-Dacron-Continuous-Support-Tape-Streaming-Video

It is a UV protected fabric on an adhesive backing. You would remove the
fabric from your current awning, place this on the top so that it rolls to
the outside when retracted. It would be advisable to sew this to your
current awning with a UV protected thread. Any sail repair shop or awning
shop could do this rather inexpensively... it is a straight stitch with no
cutting.

I don't know where to buy the snap on covers. The one I saw was a guy in the campground that was snapping one onto his awning on a 5th wheel trailer. He said he didn't think it would be a problem when he opened out the awning and he was going to leave it snapped on. I saw them for sale in a booth at the big tent. Maybe there is a way to do a search for venders at the big tent. This was the only thing he was selling.
