Ken,
I don't think that's the same one that visited GMCES Elkhart. Different
paint (that one was primarily maroon, IIRC) and front end treatment. That
was a beauty & they were making lots of noise about "going in the business"
-- but disappeared from the scene, AFAIK.

It seems a trend. A lot of money is spent on upgrading these coaches and a couple years down the road, they are FOR SALE.
My bet is everyone of these coaches had a loan to do the up grade and the owners are getting out from the loan.
The only ones making a profit are the companies doing the up grade.
It says, COLLECTABLE.... I thought ORIGINAL coaches were collectable?????
When I got into this, I paid up front to keep away from the credit mongers. Seeing this, I'm glad I went in that direction.
Mine may never look like new as this one does, but it is comfortable and paid for.
I really don't see the big money some once touted here ever coming to be. Unless you are a millionaire, that is. I just don't see that kind of money being realistic.
any thoughts?

I'm with you Larry. One of the best things about the GMC (besides our amazing support groups) is that for us it was a pay-as-you-go vehicle. We pulled ours from a FL swamp as almost a total junker and paid very little for it. Over the last couple years we've certainly racked up the bills getting it running and useable again. The difference, of course, is I didn't have the cash upfront when I bought it, whereas over the years I've had the money to put into it without a dollar of debt.
Mine still doesn't look anywhere near as good as the one for sale, probably not as upgraded, and might never be, despite spending a pretty penny on it. I'm pretty sure if you have the cash, you can buy a real nice coach that someone else lost a boat-load upgrading and updating. But it's a tough one to afford and borrowing money from a bank to buy a 30+ year old vehicle just never struck me as a great idea.

That coach is a stunner in person. I posted it on the net a couple years
ago and went and inspected it. It is a work of art and all the work done by
the owner in MI. The asking price in Tucson was $25K, I don't know what it
sold for. You guys are doing a bit of speculation here. To me this is much
better than any original '73 will ever be.
Probably one of the reasons most of us bought GMCs is that it was a way to
get there from here without worrying about making a $100K mistake. Here was
something we could by for nearly chump change (by comparison) and restore at
our own pace as our cash flow permitted.

GMCer's...I am amazed at some of the comments regarding the asking price of this GMC. While I've never seen this GMC first hand, what I see seems to be worth the money all day long.
Seems to me that "value" is subjective, however, when compared with what people spend on RV's ($100,000 + New), a well reconstructed GMC at $30k IS a bargain.
I do understand that we are not all in the same income bracket,
but that does not change the reletive good value that these coaches are. Keeping things in perspective, and being mindfull of the different "ecenomic zones" around Canada and the US, I am prepaired to say that there is a general attitude that see's these coaches as being worth less than they should be. We need to check our attitudes as we have the power to influence the market place regarding what it is that we have here.
My 78 PB has about $35000 invested, and is a beautiful coach.
If it were for sale, I would not let it go for anything under $30,000.
I bought Linnwood Arthur's 29.5" stretch which, needs some work
due to neglect, but once that has been done, the coach will go back on the market at $30,000+. Will she be "worth" that?

Hi Dan,
In my life, experience has taught me that things like cars and motorbikes (so probably motorhomes) only retain real value if they are original. I'm not sure if you've ever watched a Barrett-Jackson auto auction, there's the originals which always fetch the highest prices, and then there's the modifieds - these can sometimes exceed originals if they're done in good taste... but there we go - that is quite relative to the buyer, so it can be a big hit or miss.
If I had no imagination or interest to do anything but get in, turn the key and go, a 30k GMC would be an ok choice...but (and it's a big but), I'd probably be looking for something that came with a warranty and could do a whole lot better than 10 mpg, and for that sort of immediate outlay, there are some pretty good alternatives.
There's the one on eBay we've just discussed in another thread - there's someone who probably had his fun and just said get it out of here, and it will be a bargain or apparently a bargain versus the amount the fellow spent on it over time.
All that said, I'd still take a GMC. They're nifty and I want to put my own 'stamp' on it in my own way. The way I look at it, any money I put in to it (and that includes the purchase price), is gone to the wind. It's just for fun and there's just no way I could call it an investment - I think it's boats and RVs that are basically pure liabilities in the eyes of some...well, so be it. If they (if it) gives me some fun and satisfaction and hopefully great memories, well that's worth everything.
I believe in my searching I've seen them now for as little as $600 up to just under 100k. Conditions everywhere bottom to top, and one absolute original for $50k. Well, as much as I enjoyed looking at the 95k modified, I just don't see it happening for the seller unless his buyer is really hooked on having that specific coach for some unknown reason. That sort of money makes the range of options just incredible and not to take away from anything, but sorry, there are much better things to be had for that sort of money *if* you wanted a turnkey rv.
Just my unique perspective as a 'not yet but willing' GMCer.

I would no more say that money spent on upgrading the coaches is an "investment" than I would say money spent on oil changes is an investment. We spend to go down the road with the safety, reliability and creature comforts we desire in a motorhome and we tinker on them as a hobby. Buying $35K of Netflix last September would be alot better way to invest than spending $35K on a GMC upgrade.
As with most things, marriage, parenting, Motorhome ownership, alot of it has to do with expectations.

I'm in Florida looking at coaches & then 1 pops up in my neck of the woods. Actually 2, also a 74 in Cobourg Ont.[ 20 mins from home] My brother-in-law lives in London & is checking this one out for me. I still think it needs bumpers.
