*Easy answer.... at the GMC Motorhomes International 2012 Fall Convention*
That's right...we will be returning the the Amana Colonies in Iowa!
The Amana Colonies are a group of settlements of German Pietists in Iowa,
comprising seven villages. Calling themselves the Ebenezer Society or the
Community of True Inspiration, *die Gemeinde der wahren Inspiration*, they
first settled in New York state near Buffalo in what is now the Town of West
Seneca. However, in order to live out their beliefs in more isolated
surroundings they moved west to the rich soil of east-central Iowa (near
present-day Iowa City) in 1855. They lived a communal life until the mid
1930s.
A striking feature of the Amana Colonies is that for eighty years they
maintained an almost completely self-sufficient local economy, importing
very little from the wider, industrializing U.S. economy. The Amanians were
able to achieve this independence and life style by adhering to the
specialized handcrafts and farming occupations which they had brought with
them from Germany.
Today, Amana is a major tourist attraction known mainly for its restaurants
and craft shops. Included in the shops are woodworking shops, wine shops,
great food, and even a brewery called Millstream. The colonies as a whole
have been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1965.
The Amana Colonies are located 5 miles north of Interstate 80 on Iowa
Highways 151, 6 and 220. The Colonies are 20 miles southwest of Cedar
Rapids, and 17 miles west of Iowa City.
Watch for more updates on an exciting convention to be held Saturday,
September 22 - Friday, September 28 in Amana, Iowa.

I know it was done before (1998 and 2004 Fall) but I would look into Tom Johnson Camping Center in Marion NC. We were there last fall and they had a huge convention (some gospel/religious outreach group) going on and everyone we talked to was very complimentary of the facilities. It's also located in a great area of the country for natural / historical sightseeing. Maybe a little too far East, not sure if Amana counts as East or West, but it looked like the attendance was good in '04 compared to other conventions at the time.

Another suggestion for Spring 2012
Memphis Tn..
Home of Graceland, Elvis, Stax Records, the blues, CompCams and the
Agricenter International
http://www.agricenter.org/
Note the photo of the rv park where the FMCA Eastern region held a gathering in 07.
Close to Tunica, MS, for those who might like the casinos...or for a regional club event just prior or post the GMCMI gathering.
I would be happy to help with logistics since I live close by.

Memphis might not be the home of barbecue, but it's mighty good down that way! I wouldn't leave that off your list.

And for the wrench turners, Snap-On has a facility nearby as does
Mahle-Clevite (engine bearings etc) and Lunati Cams.
Also, two self serve mens' malls - U-Pull It and Pull A Part.
And I would also volunteer to help.

There were almost 400 coaches at the rally in Marion, NC. I believe this was the the largest number of attendees at any GMCMEI rally

Better check the weather. According to the internet it averages 60 in the day and 40 at night in March. A bit cool for most GMCers to attend a spring rally. That is why GMCMI has their spring rally farther south. Memphis might be fine for a fall rally though.

What facilities are required for a convention???
The Illinois Beach State Park
http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R2/Ilbeach.htm About 50 miles North of Chicago, 50 miles South of Milwaukee.
is located by the North-East corner of the state of illinois, South of Zion, North or Waukegan / Beach Park in a quiet campground off of lake Michigan. There is a lodge on the property for those who prefer to travel by car.
Just asking.

I suspect that the alcohol ban would make
this park unsuitable for convention use
based upon list comments by quite a few
of the GMCers on the list!

For the GMCMI conventions we used to say a facility with parking for 300 motorhomes. But now our attendance is more like 200 to 250 for the fall conventions and perhaps 150+ for the spring ones.
In addition we need at least two buildings. One which will hold enough tables for catered meals for 2 people x the number of motorhomes.
We can hold meetings in that building and technical seminars. We need another building for the non-technical seminars. We used to sometimes use a large tent but those cost thousands of dollars now for the time we need them and they are not too desirable if it rains or is windy. We also like to have the buildings near the camp sites so that our people don't have to walk a long way. This is not always possible so we have found that people are very willing to share rides with their toad vehicles.
Most people today like sites with sewer connections at the motorhome and, of course, water and electricity. Sewer hookups are not totally necessary but we get a lot of complaints if we don't have them.
Sites with nearby restaurants are also wanted. Sites with things to do in the area are also desirable.
We have tried to hold our spring conventions in the lower part of the USA because of the warmer climate. The fall conventions have been held in the northern or central USA. The spring one is usually held in March so that the people that go south in the winter have a chance to attend before returning back to the north. We also like to have it over prior to the Income Tax time of 4/15 or the celebration of Easter as many people like to be home for that to share it with their families. We also try to not interfere with the FMCA National Convention time and try not to overlap local GMC clubs scheduled events. This often takes a lot of communication and cooperation between the various GMC clubs.
The fall ones have been held in September (sometimes early Oct.). We have tried to hold them earlier but campgrounds or fairgrounds that are large enough for us usually are too busy before Sept and won't book us because we generally take over the whole campground for two weeks. We set up during part of the first week, hold the convention for 7 days, and then need a day or so to pack up.
Other GMC clubs which have smaller attendance have an easier time finding campgrounds and usually only use them for 3 or possibly 4 days.
