I just saw on Dan's blog the engine in coach is making bad noise and he is waiting on wrecker to tow to Tucson. He has contacted Steve Ferguson.

That is just hard luck. I know they put a lot of miles on that rig each year, but they have rotten luck with engines so far. I hope it all works out and is something minor. You can't hope to meet a pair of nicer, friendlier people or, except for the engine history, a nicer, more updated coach.

G'day,
I just called them (6:15 pm Tucson time) and spoke to Teri; they're a bit
disappointed but are in good spirits as they are both fine and at the end of
the day its only the engine.
Teri did note that the repair shop was not a very romantic place to spend
Valentine's Day! ;-)

Dan -- my wife and I spent our first anniversary a few years ago in Jim Bounds Coop parking lot on our first trouble-filled trip in the GMC. Figured our marriage wasn't going to last very long after that escapade! I ended up taking Crystal out for a few nice dinners, a bit of groveling, and a promise to make the GMC work better (still working on that one), and we are still happily married coming up on our fourth anniversary. I get to tell that story a lot, and Crystal gets to use it like a bludgeon on occasion. You'll probably remember this Valentine's Day for a good long time. If not, ask Teri to remind you every now and then... she'll be happy too!

OK Dan, You have a place to stay while you're in Tucson (probably several). But, I know for you guys, "home is where the GMC is". We'll talk again tomorrow. Happy Valentines Day!

Dan
Sorry to hear of your misfortune Paula and I drove over to Quartsite yesterday looking for you but didn't see your coach so we figured you had left for your trip east.

We supplied the engine to MGM GMC to install in Dan's coach.
From the beginning, the oil samples did not meet the average contaminants.
There are some things that cause a engine to start generating metal particles.
One is not being able to flush the oil cooler , pulling a toad too
soon, not mixing the oil additives with the oil before pouring it in
before priming the oil system.
Sometimes the crank grinder does not do a very good job in the thrust
bearing area.
No way to tell for sure when the engine starts knocking and wiping out
the evidence.
Only consolation is a warranty on the engine. There is a chance that I
can get the shop to help out with the labor.

Well I guess another bright side is that when retired (as I soon may be or am trying to be) you don't absolutely HAVE to be anywhere. And you're in good company.
Dan, just curious what oil and oil filter you were running and what additives if any. Maybe its just a sloppy big end rod bearing causing the piston to rap the head shelf. (BTDT) Mine was quite at idle and then noisy above 1500RPM. "Maybe" that can be done from below w/o pulling the engine if the crank is OK. Good luck and keep us posted as I'm sure you will.

Jim made a good point if that oil cooler isn't cleaned 99% it is very likely the replacement engine will not last very long. Too many shops seem to think a little brake cleaner and a few blasts of air will remove the metal debree from the cooler. It took me a week of running gas several hours a day with the aluminum radiator out of the coach and positioned every witch way and back flushing with blasts of air between before it stopped showing small metal particals. Even after all that I replaced the engine oil and filters 3 times in 1800 miles and cut the filter open to have a look see. I also had Blackstone make sure all was normal. If I were doing an engine change on the road I would disconnect the radiator cooler and install a large after market cooler to be safe.
