That item....
Never before, but you can get the newer version on E-bay for a ~30$us and for a little more you can get 2wattt, the big antenna and N. Shop all of the heading before you buy.

Yea, keep your eye on ebay. This is a neat thing to have around. I have a 1 watt version and do use it when I must be a little too far away from my wireless modem and card. It is the best deal going for wifi. I know for a fact. Have spent hundreds of dollars on wifi equipment. Stopped all of my spending when I got one of these.

If someone finds the 2 watt version at a fair price
please post a link to buy it.

Thanks!

The 2 watt was on ebay for 36.95 or best offer. I shot them 30 bux but they would not take it. Keep in mind that the receiver must be "hot". I kinda doubt the 2 watt will be any better than the 1 watt due to receive probably being the same.

Do not get too hung up on a 2000mw one. It will not work any better than a 1000mw one. If you find one at the right price then fine, go for it.

I had this problem all the time with clients when they got enamored with numbers. "My friend's a hospital X has two T3's going their main location so I want one here." When I asked what they were going to hook to the T3 or why they need it they could not say.

I had one bank that just had to have a T3 to service their remote locations. They got one and it literally ran across the alley (less than 300 feet) to the phone company building where it got broken down into 4 T1's. I had to break it down on the bank end the same way. The remaining 24 T1's were left unused. They never stopped to find out whether the numbers they were hearing meant anything to them. Note a T3 equals 28 T1's.

Here is my reasoning.

ALL WiFi is bi-directional. As we say in the ham radio world. You can not work em if you can't hear em. Every access point I have ever worked with was 100 mw. or less. So having more power in one direction than the other is totally useless.

One last thing. Most of your data transfer to and from a PC down to the PC with only acknowledgments being sent back on the 1000 mw. transmitter direction to the access point. (The exception to this is sending large emails.)

The difference between 1000mw and 2000mw is 3db and the gain is in only one direction. If you want better range look at a better antenna that will give you 3 db. (or more) gain in BOTH directions.

I'm off of the soap box. I'd buy one if the price is right and I needed one. I already own two 500 mw. ones and they work just fine so I see no reason to "upgrade".

Ken,
Thank you for saving me the writing time.....
With my antennas and the 500 size, I have never not been able to use an access that I could find. Sometimes I could not locate the actual source as it could not be seen.

For those that want to play - cheap - go to:

This does help if you are only marginal, but it is usually easier to move the coach for the evening.

Dan,

Would you explain 'receiver must be hot'?

Richard,

"Hot" is an expression used by technical radio folks to mean that the receiver is sensitive and very capable of receiving signals. Your GMRS mobile has a hotter receiver than the portable.

The output power difference between the two WiFi units he's talking about won't do you any extra good if the unit can't hear the signal it's going to repeat.

Ken pretty much explained the "hot" receiver. When your output power goes up your receive needs to increase. The receivers in these things are already as hot as I think they can get. Therefore, you are working all you can see already with a one watt unit. Before these things came along and before I got the Verizon card I was playing with amplifiers, preamplifiers, and beam antennas at 50 feet. This little unit is much easier and a whole lot cheaper.

I've got one of those around here somewhere. I think I cut it out of a soda can. I do not remember for sure.
