Work progresses at a terribly slow pace. After 15 driveways. Alot of wood hauled and 3 roofs shoveled I finally got to work on the new dash. To you who haven't fallowed,,,new dash and converting to electric HVAC controls. Search my old posts. Got the inside air box and the AC plenum out. Got the big outside airbox out. But not without diffuculity. On Caddy installs you have to raise the radiator. Can't get the air box out. Gots to lower the rad back down. And release the top support so it can tilt a little. Would have pulled the top support but it won't come out. Before I got the big airbox out spent a bunch of time making a mount for the little electric motor on the inside upper plenum door. About 95% done on the first one. Made a nice little counter weight for the upper door and a mount thats adjustable a few degrees for fine tuneing. But,,,,,after getting the rest of the airbox out,,,,its just a terrible design. I counted SEVEN 90 degree bends to get air from the fan to you in AC mode!!!5 in heat mode. I don't think you could design a worse system with more bends. I know its all about ease of install and manufacture. But the heater core looks really small. Its no wonder we got such little heat when it was below 32 in Tx on our last trip. Brrrrrrr. Now I'm wondering if a complete diffrent system would be better than this awfull thing. And 78's are supposed to be better than pre-77. Was going to try and convert it to elec. control intact but some of the doors and shafts are way in and up high. O-well,not sure wat to do now,,,,,,,PL

I think that the design may require a total overhaul to be much better. Figure that GM engineers had 5 years and 3 tries to make it better (though with cost constraints) and didn't seem to really do a great job.

The aftermarket systems from Kool-Aire that the Jims carry may be the best, easiest alternative for increasing the AC output(and may have some heating capability as well). I seem to recall some threads where people placed auxilary heater coils with blowers under the seats, etc. to increase the heating capability. As the coach does have the coolant hoses running back to the water heater, there should be no problem in tapping into them for a source of hot water for the heater.

I no longer have the heated by engine feature. But yes its very easy to add more heat. More AC capacity is a little harder.,,,,thanks for responding,,,PL

I looked over Jim K's site and did not see info on
the Kool-Aire stuff.

Would someone who has this set-up comment about it?

Thanks!

Wait a minute..... Did I forget to do something? My radiator
is still in the same place it's been since 1977. What in the
Cadillac installation would require moving it? It's not on top
of the motor. Enlighten me on what I've missed.
I don't have any problems with heat since I closed the garage
door and turned up the thermostat.

Richard,
Larry Schaffer, Tony Lloyd and I have all put in systems
from Vintage Air. I believe that
it is the same one that Jim sells. Larry and I used the Slimline Heat
and Air, model 11301- VUX-A,
Tony used the Air only system, 11301- VUY-A.

On Applied/GMC's website: http://www.appliedgmc.com/level.itml/icOid/944
the link to the Vintage Air catalog page is:

http://www.vintageair.com/catalog10/2010%20VintageAir%20Catalog%20web%20hi-res%20%28Page%2022%29.pdf
or
*http://tinyurl.com/4wzupqh

The kits from Vintage Air are NOT complete. There are some 'T's that you
need to
fit the existing A/C lines and they are VERY difficult to find. Jim has
all the parts that you
would need.

Terry,

Does your unit sit under the dash below the Height Control valves or does it
stick out beyond the bottom of the dash.

I installed a similar system that was 12 inches deep I got from Jim B last
summer but there was no way I could fit it as pictured on Jim K's website
without cutting a hole in the floor and making a box that the squirrel cage
blowers would go into.

The systems are called Vintage aire on Jim's site. There are a few aftermarket AC systems out there (mainly for the street-rod and early muscle car crowd), and I assumed that JimK's system was one of those.

Rob,
This unit fits partially under the air valves, but does stick
out some. We have all
built shelves to sit on top of the unit. I will try take some pictures
and put on the
photo site.

Paul,

What I wish I could have done, and encourage you to do if you can, is visit
a large RV salvage lot to search for a class A motorhome dash unit. Those
are generally pretty compactly integrated, with flexible connections (once
you've scrapped the GMC's HVAC box). They don't generally depend on a duct
system, leaving you the flexibility to create your own or use hoses, as most
of them seem to do, from what I've seen. Both their configuration and
capacity are much more in line with our needs than the street rod units.
I'm sure the unit that was in my Safari would have worked very nicely in
the GMC. The Elkhart area RV surplus stores are another good source.

Terry,

I understand, it sticks out on my GMC too and I too built a shelf out of
1/2" plywood. It sits on a piece of angle aluminum directly below the ride
height valves.

If you look at the one on Jim K's website it sure looks like the face of the
Vintage air unit stops directly under the ride height control valves. It may
be an optical contusion, however! ;-)

The search "label:gmcnet +leavitt +radiator" in GMail found the old thread
right away. I, too, had forgotten that discussion. When I installed my
Cad500, I didn't do anything about fan/shroud clearance -- it looked OK.
But the first time I "put my foot in it", I thought I'd blown the engine!
The fan hit the shroud at the upper right under hard acceleration torque.
I wound up elongating the shroud (Jenkins') mounting holes to adjust the
location, curing the problem. However, my custom front bracket and Olds
mount probably positions the engine a little lower than the Cad mount.

Went to the Danhard website and the vintage air site. Some of the VA stuff looks just like the Danhard. In case anyone missed it. I purchased an AC hose crimper awhile back. Can crimp hoses if needed. Still not sure what to do. might go with add on,,,,,,PL

If you use the Slaton valves, it requires more work.

Slaten leveling valves are from J.R. Slaten. They are the gold standard for

Someday down the road when I decide to redo my dash, I am going to take an entire dash out of a Suburban or an Explorer, and use the whole shebang! Modern trucks have really good units due to the R134A needs, and 50+ years of development.
