I posted Sunday morning on our local yahoo-freecycle group that I had this aluminum motorhome that needed to go.

I got about 10 response. Despite my best effort to convey the whole story, with phrases like "this is absolute scrap, all useful bits of the motorhome are gone, there is nothing here but scrap metal, this will be very difficult"; i still got one response form someone looking to live in it.

Anyway, from the list of applicants I picked one who seemd to have a clue and he showed up on time the following evening,

He started the next morning (Tuesday) when i got home from work one whole side was gone (first photo)

And so it went for the rest of the week. This morning it was 35 degrees and freezing rain, i had the day off, i was on my third cup of coffee when i heard the sawzall.

By the end of the day he was putting frame sections in his truck

I'll report back this week with the total weight.

I felt bad for the guy and told him to help himself to the junk 1985 Saab and a dozen or so batteries i had planned to take to the recycler.

The windshields, bumper, and rear window all looked like they were still usable. Unfortunately, none are very easy to ship inexpensively.

Never know what someone may need!

That looks like a plane crash.
I hope the lad makes out OK dollar wise. That's a lot of work.

The drivers window broke, pass window is good but badly fogged. I'm keeping the bumper, trailer hitch and tire carrier for a rainy day.

They are free for the taking- or the cost of shipping.

Sad to see.

But some coaches are beyond an "economically feasible" recovery. At least some of the parts live on in other GMC's.

Why was this one that far gone?
It sounds like it took a couple days just to try to cut up the body and a day to cut the frame, the frame doesnt look that bad in the pics, but pics can lie...

Its not unusual to replace the interiors or engines. Jim B tears them apart anyway, so what was so far gone on this one?? Sorry ifsomeone mentioned it before, I did not see a comment.

But seeing it deconstructed is kind of interesting to see the inards.... No Wud I meen?

It was a sad story.

I bought the coach for parts last year. The forensic assesment of the the coach and the paperwork told the story.

In the late 90's the owner had a lot of work done, fresh engine & trans, redone upholstery etc.

But his home address was less than a block from the Atlantic Ocean (virginia Beach) and the coach had spent some time earlier in its life in Ohio.

The frame had pockets of rot from end to end.

Now someone needs to buy the $1200 coach in Delaware or I may be tempted to buy that one for parts, now that I have someone willing to take away the carcass. Very Happy

Very Happy

Frames can be replaced...

Anything can be done. But, does it make economical sense?

In todays market, unless the coach is REALLY nice, replacing a rotted frame costs more than the coach is worth.

Still, sad to see.

I disagree. From a $2000 project to a $50,000 dream machine, i would argue that you'll see more money back on a GMC than any other motorhome. THe rest are junk to begin with and deteriorate badly.

I learned a lot about how these things are put together as I watched it come apart. It is pretty amazing.

For the record, I bought the GMC last year to get parts for my Revcon but before I made the decision to part it out I conferred with several true believers about whether this coach could or should be saved.

It looked nice and had a lot of work done on the drive train but it was still all stock, with original glass, wheel, brakes, suspension and aspiration. And no title.

So you'd be $5000 into it before the restoration could really begin.

THere are too many intact coaches with good frames to make that a viable option, at least, no one was asking me what it would take to stop me from parting it out. I would have taken just what i had in it.

Meanwhile, there'sa nice coach in Delaware for $1200 someone needs to jump on.

What I find sad, is the fact that somebody called about just having it to live in, apparently as a shelter. Tough times.

Dave, Is that Delaware? or Eastern Maryland? Just curious. I saw a nice GMC, near Dover, that was sitting in high grass. The lawn had been neatly mowed around it. NO other details.

Dave, Is that Delaware? or the coach on Maryland's Eastern Shore? I saw a nice GMC, near Dover, Del. They had nicely mowed the grass around it, but the remaining grass was very high. Probably had not moved in awhile.

I'd love to sell my coach for what I have in it. The problem is, eveyone wants
to pay $2,000 for a coach in which I've invested $20,000. Guess I'll just leave
it for the kids to fight over.
