GM must be trying to make a profit center of the museum.

Absolutely. Although it's not actually the Heritage Center but all of the copyrighted GM Photographic images from things like press and catalog shots going back years. It's all been digitized by something called GM Asset Management (outsourced, of course) and it's big business. I forget the numbers, but Harley Davidson is the leader at that stuff and makes a ridiculous amount of money on it.

The GM photostore has been up and running for at least 7 years to my knowledge, and I have bought many images of their concept and showcars from that site.

The image of the Trans Am Traveller GMC Motorhome surrounded by 1978 Trans Ams was used by GM in adverts and brochures to promote the 1978 Trans Am , and is probably the main reason I have a GMC Motorhome today.(my 1978 Trans Am was identical to the Brown one on the right of that photo)

I was pretty dissapointed that GM chose not to get Cinnabar to restore that particular coach back to its Trans Am Traveller specs, but I was absolutely dumbfounded when the idiots that run GM closed down the whole Pontiac Division.

Gary,

If you look through the photos, you will find one picture that
shows the
rear spoiler and the fender flares and front spoiler. They all
came from
Diversified(sp?) Glass, who also made a bunch of other glass trim
pieces
for Pontiac. John Walker has the fender flares on his coach.
As an aside, they also made the body panels for the 84 Fiero race
car that
Pontiac designed.

I believe there probably were two "trans am territory" GMCs based on the following:

The one Gary mentioned has several extra trim pieces, front air dam, fender flares & rear spoiler. This is the same GMC that was restored by GM Heritage Collection. While discussing its restoration with Dick Balsley he mentioned they removed all the other pieces but not the rear spoiler because it was so well adheared to the body it would have caused too much damage to remove it and decided to leave it. The restoration is without question top notch, having restored it to original trans am territory condition would have been my choice.

The GMC with the Firebirds has none of the extra trim pieces mentioned above. Paint/graphic details appear identical on both GMCs.

No idea why there were differences, speculation can now begin :^)

I don't know John Walker, but John Evans has those same fender flares on his 1973 GMC.

All right, Bill. You caught me on my bad memory for names. John
Evans it is.
John Walker is on my Cadillac Forum. Oh, Well!
By the way, I got acquainted with Bob Birchmeier(sp?) at a street
rod show in
Columbus, Ohio. His GMC had all those flares and spoilers on it.
I talked him
into attending the GMCMI gathering a couple of months later.
Never saw him
after that. Too bad.
