I was talking on the phone last night with my mother, bless her, and
she told me that it should be a short winter because she saw on TV
that the muskrat came out of it's den and didn't see it's shadow!

If I wanted to write a book I could not have thought that up! :)

Emery,

Yes, and as we all age we may all come up with similar statements. Reminds
me of the old Art Linkletter segment - "Kids say the darndest
things"..."Seniors say the darndest things"! And I could be one soon! lol

Would that be akin to Feb 2, groundhog day?

Various famous groundhogs did not see their shadows and therefore it will be a short winter, or so the story goes...

Tuesday (Groundhog Day) was my mother's 85th birthday. It's easy to remember that date and It is easy for me to remember her age since she is 30 years older than I am. Thanks Mom!

Yep, only a month and a half of winter left. Think Spring!

Whereas, if he HAD seen his shadow we would still have six long weeks of winter....

Makes sense if you don't think about it...

In Southern Illinois groundhogs are known as muskrats. I didn't know what a
groundhog was until I went to Arkansas (after getting my visa approved).
First meal I had after arriving was a delicacy - possum on the half shell.

Byron,
Just wondering then, what do they call Muskrats in S. IL?

Being a farm boy I've had lots of experience with groundhogs and their holes in the fields.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog

But not growing up by a river, I haven't seen many muskrats.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muskrat

GMC content, never let wheel drop in a groundhog hole!

Ok.. I was looking for a picture of a wheel stuck in a groundhog hole and I came across this site... if you have a bad day, just check out these pics .

I don't believe that muskrats and groundhogs
are the same animal.

I seem to remember some kids who trapped for
muskrats in ponds and swamps back in western
NY state where I grew up

Granddad had a .22 cal Mossberg single shot
rifle he used to nail the critters that tried
to raid his vegetable garden crops. He used
a different name for them, but I'm pretty sure
that it was another name for groundhogs. The
name he used escapes me at the moment now.

BTW, "Possum on the Half Shell" is the humorous
name for armadillo! When served, they are almost
always road kill sourced.

The date of Groundhog averages out to be
halfway between Winter Solstice and Vernal
(Spring) Equinox. Just an excuse to have
a party!

We call groundhogs, woodchucks in Canada, at least in Ont. & Que. It was fun hunting them after the hay fields were cut as they didn't seem to realize their cover was gone.

WOODCHUCKS! That's the name of the critters
that were after my granddad's veggies! He'd
sit on a chair in the back yard and wait for
them to appear at the edge of the garden and
then POW!

I had been told they were the same as the
groundhogs, but I'm not really sure!

Yeppers! Woodchuck is the name I forgot.
NY state borders ON and PQ, so prolly
critter names are common.

What most people in the US, at least in
the South, call crappies, we called
calico bass.

Es verdad. Muskrats and groundhogs are different. But, when you hate both
and want to get rid of them it's easier to yell one name and watch everyone
point and shoot.

You may have been trying to think of woodchuck. Groundhog and woodchuck are
one and the same.

Biologically, the muskrat is in a different genus from the groundhog.

Bruce,

When you live in "the bottoms" in Southern Illinois you have both flat land,
small rivers and big creeks. During heavy rains the bottoms flood easily. We
shot both on site because all the coyotes and wolves, that would have
enjoyed the critters, were scarce.

They look amazingly similar though the muskrat seems to be a bit bigger.
When they're wet they look rather oily. I have seen some rather large
groundhogs, however, while looking for wild blackberries.

The sly bit of humor in the other post is that there is a difference between
the two just as there's a difference between an opossum and an armadillo.

What do we call muskrats? That reminds me of the story of the father (a
preacher) and son out hunting one day with my dad. They shot one or the
other (can't remember) as it ran across the end of a field. When they got up
close to be sure he was dead the son said: "I guess the Lord called him
home."

Woodchucks and groundhogs are the same critters. I have 3 around on my property. They also make good eating if you get a young one in the spring after they hibernate. Older ones or fat ones have a bad taste. Hard as the dickens to skin and you have to cook them in a pressure cooker or they are tough as leather. After the pressure cooker you roll the parts in flour and fry in butter, makes fine eating, when you do it right. Makes a good gravy for biscuits too.

Kinda reminds me of the way to cook a "planked duck". First shoot the duck,
scald it in hot water to remove the feathers, gut it, clean it real good &
remove any shot that you can find, split it down the back so it will lay
flat on the plank, season it up real good with your favorite seasoning, lay
it flat on the plank and tie it down with butchers string. Put it in your
BBQ and close the lid & cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of
160 degrees, carefully remove it from the BBQ, remove the strings, throw
away the duck & eat the plank.<GRIN>
