I have loaded some photos showing the access holes in the floor that allows access to the fuel tank floats. I followed Gene Fisher,s drawing showing the location. They were right on the money. (Thanks Gene). Luck was with me as the needed holes were in the center of one of the laminate floor planks. I did have to cut the end of one plank so it would slide out. When I reinstall the floor plank I won't use the snap lock feature on that end. Access to the tank floats is now just pulling the end trim and sliding the floor plank out.

Gene, I was able to use compression fittings to connect the steel lines. Again thanks for the location drawing. It was right on the money.
Dan, I did cut holes for both tanks. I will install the floor plank in three pieces with the ends butted to make removing easy. Now Lets hope I never will need to use them:>)

Gene,
I did the metal lines a couple of years ago when I had the tanks down to clean. I think you would at least need to let the tanks hang down to snake the hard lines in.

It was just something to do. I like to tinker and this seemed like a fun project. Winter in northern Ohio gives you plenty of time to tinker. A little heat in a snow covered GMC is quite comfortable.

wow

I like the cover, I will link it to the topic on my web page, I am not
sure of my final cover, but it will be something.

I am now looking at connecting the two tank drains with a connecting pipe,
(ala JimB) , so that there is effectively:
one tank,
one sender,
one pickup,
no tank selector,
no dash switch.
one set of fuel lines.

I think the "dis-functional, reserve" is a waste of time, since it does not
work up hill and down ;>)

will let you know

"I think the "dis-functional, reserve" is a waste of time, since it does not

I'm not sure I agree with that -- gotta think about whether I'd rather be
climbing a hill with 12 gallons of gas piled up at the rear of the Main
tank, or 6 gallons piled up at the rear of the Aux and 6 more in the Main.
...
...
...
Well, maybe some of the 12 gallons would be reachable by the Main pick up
tube -- provided that's the one I've got connected to a pump. But suppose I
choose to put a pump only on the Aux pickup? Or am going downhill with the
pump on the Main?
...
...
...
Maybe I just won't go to the trouble to hang something else down below the
frame. Or, if I do, maybe I'll keep both pumps and the selector switch.

well, you see

http://gmcmotorhome.info/tank.html

when you go down hill almost all of the gas ends up in the aux , tank

if they are connected at the bottom it would return to the main tank, and
make both tanks equal again when you return to flat driving.
and
the efi puts most of the returned gas into the aux tank, as a result you are
always switching back and forth to use all the gas.

I think I will try it a while and see how it works

Just had to replace the selector valve ( not fun) and have a overflow leak
in some of the tank hoses ( 2x too many) the system is a pain in the butt.

Gene,
The 500 Cadillac I have in our GMC has a return line on the manual fuel pump. I routed the return line to the gas filler tube. This puts returning fuel into both tanks. JWID
Also Gene I would like to put a copy of your gas tank location diagram with my photos if it is OK with you

I need a confirmation on the measurements from
the links below. It appears that the center of
the front sender location is very close to 85"
behind the "step" to the cockpit. Is that from
the rearmost part of the step?

Is the 41 1/2" measurement from the outside
edge of the door's sill plate?

I strongly suspect that I will need to do this
access process on "The Money Pit" and REALLY
don't want to make a wrong cut.

Yeah, I'm paranoid, too!

So Jim, on your way home from GMCMI, great webpage by the way, how about you and Sandy stopping by our house for a few days? We do the holes in our floor. I can get away with it as long as you are present. Teri will not raise her voice when we have company. We have same flooring as you do. Very Happy I have been thinking about this for a couple of years now. I have new electric fuel pumps to drop in the tanks.

don't want to make a wrong cut.

Yeah, I'm paranoid, too!

Yes the 85" measurement is from rearmost part of the steps into the cockpit assuming you have the original plywood on the floor and steps.
The measurement from the door is from the edge of the original plywood flooring at the door. You can double check by measureing the tank since the sender is in the center of the tank.
One of the reasons the hole I cut in the floor for the front tank is so much larger and not directly over the sender is that I had some trouble transferring the measurements from the underside of the coach to the inside. Once I found the center of the front sender I was a lot more accurate cutting the hole for the rear sender.
I did not make the holes in the metal shields, they were there already.
Measure 5 or 6 times before you cut.

Nope - the sender is not in the center of the tank. See this photo and notes:

and here with the tanks shown aligned front to back:

The sender is offset a bit toward the rear. Sorry I don't know the amount of the offset.

then expand the hole to cover your needs.
Even the holes made by GMC were not in the correct place
