When I was a kid, my folks rented a motorhome for a trip to the west coast. We found an exit that lead to a great sandy beach. The offramp circled around under the highway to reach the parking lot. While the sign indicated we had plenty of clearance, sand had blown in and settled under the overpass which then decreased the height just enough to completely remove our A/C!!
We had been on the road for three weeks in close quarters already. Needless to say my dad snapped. Worse was heading home across Nevada with no air conditioning.

Me too.
I learned the hard way on my first MH a SOB. I was backing it up to my garage and carefully measured the distance from the bumper to the brick faced front of the garage. I put down blocks to make double sure I didn't hit anything.
Hopped in, backed up, and CRUNCH. WTF??
I go look and heck I'm still3 feet from the wall...
Oh, look up there. the ladder hit the eaves. Mangled the no longer made ladder.
Now, where is that tape measure?

Sometimes the height goes un-noticed
Man and Wife come in with thier camper, tired from the days journey.
They get a tight parking spot and when they get to the spot, the wife says we can do this, I'll go out and guide you.....
Wife was watching the driver side and curb side of the motorhome carefully and Hubby was watching the mirrors and Wife.
She guided him quite well, got almost halfway in, then wife yells out, "GUN IT".
Hubby Guns the gas and the motorhome lurches backward and an awful sound comes from the back of themotorhome.
This particular motor home was quite high and there were some rather large branches that otherwise would not have effected the smaller motorhomes that used that space normally.
There was some metal bent, pushed in but all repairable.
Wife said OOPS, then proceeded to tell hubby he needs to watch better next time...... lololol

LOL, I was actually kicking myself for not having the wife, or someone, help me back in when I had the ladder mishap.
Then I realized, that it would have happened anyway since no one but an experienced RV'er would know to look UP AND I wold have gotten mad at them for failing to notice the problem.
So this way everyone is happy. esp me since the SOB has been replaced with a GMC

HA HA !! Good one !!
Up in Michigan a couple of years ago I'm backing the coach into a tight spot
while Lisa was guiding me, I hear STOP ! Lisa comes up to the window and says,
"I think you jack-knifed the trailer", I asked what do you mean, she said
"because it's against the bumper and has the bumper bent up".......... JUST
SHOOT ME !!!
After I cooled down we had a discussion on how it's supposed to work, now we use
walkie talkie's. LOL
Funny thing is, it's all part of "the story" and the fun of camping adventures.
I need to remember to put on my TO DO list....... straighten rear bumper, never
got to that yet !

My dad was backing up his 18 foot Aloha camper and clipped the eave on the corner of the garage. (Lucky for me, he was being guided by my older brothers... not me.) To keep me from having a similar experience, when I built my "motorhome corral," I placed one of the gate posts directly under the eave.

This pair was actually camping a space or so from us at Disneys Fort Wilderness. There were a lot more trees around the spaces then. I started walking toward them to lend a hand UNTIL I heard the BANG, SCRATCHHHHHHHHHHH. I sort of turned around like I was just walking.....
There was another family that drove in, young couple and their young son. Hubby did not drive the car that pulled a trailor. Wife would back in by herself, no help from hubby. I have had some experience backing a boat trailor, sort of the same, so I guided her in, BOY YOU CAN BET I was watching the sides, the wheels and the roof all the way till she shifted to PARK...
There was one more, Hubby and wife parking a 45 foot BUS camper. Again, the space was very difficult to maneuver into. Wife got out and she said Hi as she was walking back. Before she got back there she said it was the first time they parked the bus.
Being the good GMC'er I am, I helped, showing her to watch the back end swing which was different from wheel position, watching the sides, top and to stay out of the way. They did ok!, just brushing some limbs on the sides. But if she did it alone, I envisioned much worse.

So, maybe the wireless remote backup camera that is on sale at AZ for $49 is
what is needed - maybe two. Mount one flush with the top of the rearmost
A/C unit for overhead clearance when backing up. Another one in a similar
place up front - so you can see the monitor display video noise as it hits
the steel beam - milliseconds before it removes the forward A/C unit. lol

Hi all, I am new to your list, just bought a 1973 Canyon, needs much work.
I purchased a wireless camera/monitor for my travel trailer, when going
down the road with a lot of traffic or power lines around, there is way to
much static to see anything. A couple of times I almost panicked going down
the road to see a couple of motorcycles and once a boat behind my trailer.
Seems like someone in the area was on the same frequency, I will definitely
get a hard wired camera for this Motor home. You will probably be hearing a
lot from me in the coming months with a lot of questions, this motor home
was sitting in the Arizona desert for 5+ years and never run. It took me 3
5hrs to get from my home to AZ and 12.5 hrs to get the GMC home. Now the fun
begins.
I have been reading your post for the last week and have already been
learning lot's, great group.

Serge,
Congratulations, welcome and good luck. Yes, there is a lot to be learned
from this group. I monitored it for about a year before falling through the
ice and taking the plunge (73 Glacier) lol.
There has been discussion about the wireless camera and what you actually
are seeing on your own monitor. Everything from other SOB camera to
security cameras. I guess wirer is the way to go.
