There are about 15 places on a GMC that need a little bit of light.
these are not the high power reading lights that are being sold at
Quartzsite,
but little bits of light needed all over the GMC.
Read here, this is a modification of a Dollar Tree 1 $ Puck Light
http://goo.gl/IV2Qu
3 led, puck lights, that are modified to:
run on 12 volts, at 20 ma, (0.020 amps)
plastic case and lens
built-in switch
removable mount
no batteries
last forever (LED)
can be water-proofed
Have to warn you, this is how to modify a $1 puck light to work on 12 volts
and requires dis-assembly, and soldering , ( but it is cheap;>)
I will be showing the lights and how to do the modifications at the GMC NOR
CAL work rally.

Gene,
Great inexpensive mod. I have one of those Sylvania pucks that was given
out as a freebie somewhere about 6-7 years ago. Works great when getting up
in the middle of the night and you don't want to disturb someone. I think
I'll give the your mod a shot.

yah, the batteries was what always stopped me from using the Pucks.
If the Sylvania is a dimmer one, it will be hard to convert since the pc
board has an integrated circuit on it. For $1 I have just gone to Dollar
Tree lights, not worth the time ;>)

Gene,
Not going to mod the Sylvania one - I use that in the bedroom at home. I'll
pick up the $1 ones today. Have you seen the LED lights with the magnetic
switch at the Dollar stores? One small light with a magnetic switch. Mount
the two pieces anywhere. When they separate the light goes on. Again, not
very bright - but who would have thought 20 years ago the technology would
exist - for $1. Batteries included!
Now I have to dig for the 100 ohmers.
Thanks,
Tom

Assuming 0.7v dropped by the LED, and assuming the pucks are simple LED's rather than SMD's, and assuming they're set up for nominal 20ma at 12v, they'd have a 565 ohm resistor. If the voltage goes up to 16v, then you'd have 27ma through them, and all that I've seen have a max of 30ma, so back-of-the-envelope I'd feel safe with them.
If there are 3 LED's in the puck each with 0.7v drop, then the resistor is a little smaller, but you still only get 28ma at 16v.
But hey, at a buck apiece, you're not out much even if they fry...

is not a problem with the puck lights, because, white LEDs drop about 3 to 4
volts each, as shown here
http://goo.gl/FglSU
and the 100 ohm resistor drops about 2 volts at 12 volt input (20 ma)
and
drops about 4 volts at 15 volts (40 ma)
so the 100 ohm resistor I put in protects the LEDs.

neat,
looks like no switch and $4.00 ea, but easy to use
most of these like the puck lights are not for reading, but great for the 15
spots I am filling

Too late for me to spend the big bucks on the $4 pucks. I bought four for a buck and dug my soldering iron out of the GMC. Also, near the pucks in the pucks for a buck store was a packet of speaker wire - 40 feet for a buck. Now I have a place to apply my solder.
I think I have some 100 ohm resistors. If not, I can use a couple of 50 ohm or a couple of 200 ohm resistors right? Also, I assume we can use a small 100 ohm resistor and will not need to use a big one. If my 50 ohm resistors are bigger than my 100 ohm resistors, that would rule them out. Say What? No watt! OhmY what fun we can have with Ohm's law!

I have two of them, Jay. They work well as floor lights in our GMC.
Ours are amber, the white ones put out more light, but not enough to
comfortably read by. Great night lights, though.
