I'm plan to carry a couple of bicycles on the back and it occurred to me that
the spare tire mount might be a better place to hang the bikes than having
something plug into the trailer hitch socket. Is there something readily
available that will accomplish this?

Several bike racks, that attach to the spare tire, check craigs list under bikes

My PO had a two bike rack on the coach when I bought it. The rack was mounted to the front bumper. I imagine it might be attached to the rear bumper but would need modifications to get around the spare tire. I would bet he bought it at Campers World.

I picked up this on craigslist, we had to reverse the spare to make it work, but
it does a great job and the rack itself goes on and off in minutes.

I have a two piece bicycle carrier that wraps around front or rear bumper on a GMC. It will carry 2 small mopeds and probably 4 bicycles and will let it go for cheap + shipping. Contact me off net if interested.

Gary,

When I used to carry bikes, my favorite carrier was an aluminum cargo
carrier platform for the 2" receiver. Equipped with a pair of inverted U
front tire receivers, it was much easier to use than any bike "hanger" I
ever tried. And cost only about $50 "back then".

Something similar to this but without the high railing:

http://www.harborfreight.com/500-lb-capacity-aluminum-cargo-carrier-92655.html?utm_term=92655&utm_medium=cse&utm_source=googlebase&hft_adv =10063

http://goo.gl/Zu4Wx

But it does preempt the receiver from other uses.

We carry the Ragusa fold out carrier arms that mount on the rear ladder.
I'm not sure how heavy your bikes are, but I have seen people carrying
1-2 on them.
When not in use, it folds away and does not look cluttered.

It took me a few goes to figger' out the best way to hang them but now that
I worked it out it's easy.

I have a rack like this that I mount on the Towd's spare. (A Sidekick.) Works very well. I have never mounted it on a GMC.

I have also used some plastic arms that mount to the ladder to carry a bike and a few chairs. You can find those at Camping World. They do not look as good as the Ragusa ones from JimK, but have a "locking" feature.

Whatever you do, keep the bike wheels HIGH off the ground when installation
is completed. If you were to back up and the wheels were to be below a high
curb or similar, you might end up with bicycle tires bent at 90*
Don't ask how I know! <g>

Mike,

I am just about to hit the hay and this is the last message I read.

I had to laugh as I pictured you walking behind your GMC to get the bike and
looking down at the wheels!

Many thanks to all who responded. I should have known that there are many
options for carrying bicycles - I guess I must have been oblivious until I
needed one!

I use Yakima similar to this I got off CL. A poorly designed bike rack is a big headache since they are usually the last things the kids want loaded and by then I'm pretty wore out.
