Well, after looking and a bit of hemming and hawing, my wife and I agreed to purchase a 76 Royal. The vehicle is currently in Albuquerque, NM and I expect to be picking it up on Friday morning/afternoon and then begin my drive back to the Northern, Virginia area. If everything goes right, I plan on being back to work on Tuesday (knock on wood.)

This coach was previously owned by Alan Dempsey in Fla, (a previous sale listing can be found here http://www.gmcmh.com/New_Folder3/1976%20Royal.html) and has had work done by Golby's, and Alex Sirum's shops. The 'Alex Sirum' shop completed some incredible interior work on this coach last year. Jeff from Alex Sirum spent time on the phone with me just this morning and spent a good bit of time detailing what they had done to the coach. Jeff's confidence in this coach was the deciding factor. Thanks Jeff!

When I head out from Albuquerque (I have written that city name more today then I have in all the rest of my 46 years!) I will be heading east on 40 before turning to the NE to hit St. Louis to see my son. From there it will be 70E until I get close to home! So Blacklisters beware! If I find myself near one of you near meal time, I may call on you and offer you a meal in order to pick your brains!

Bob,

Nice looking Royal!

Do yourself a favor; download and review the owners manual before you go and
pick it up.

Bob,

Congratulations & welcome to the cult.

You've apparently lurked enough to learn most of the "rules", but before you
pick up the coach, be SURE to have a good road service membership effective.
I have every confidence that you won't have any trouble, but if some little
thing should leave you beside the road, that investment could save you a lot
of money. I had a lot of confidence in my "new" GMC on 1 May 98 -- until
reaching the 875th of the 950 miles home. The road service reported that
one tow service (which they didn't dispatch) wanted $500 just to come to me
-- then talk about charges. Don't let yourself be in that position with no
protection.

Ken,

Absolutely! I will be purchasing the RV add-on to my AAA membership.

I need to go back through the list as I remember a thread discussing this very topic. I want to review what folks thought was the best road assistance plan and get signed up before I leave.

As usual, ALL thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Bob.
Congratulations on your purchase. I was interested in this coach but it was so far away. When it was 1st listed in RV Trader they were asking $56,000. Over the weeks it slowly came down to $18,900. If you negotiated an even better price, you got one heck of a deal.
I'll be following your progress with interest.

Robert,

It's it closer to go I-64 from STL to VA? The northern route gets congested.
Now, if you take I-64 you can roll right past where I live in Louisville,
KY. And, if you come through Louisville, you should plan for a brief stop at
least.

You got a bargain. The Sirum's do nice work.

We have AAA with RV Plus coverage. I'm getting CoachNet on top of that.

I think you'll like your Royale configuration.

One more thing. Since you're in Virginia you should plan on joining FMCA and
becoming a member of GMC Eastern States. If you're not a member of FMCA,
contact me. Coupons can be used for a reduction in membership fees.

Also, see if you can head to northeastern Georgia March 17-20. That's our
spring rally time in Dillard.

Everyone else, please excuse the shameless plug for FMCA and GMCES.

Bob,

Welcome to the group/cult/asylum.

You have a towing plan, I hope you also have some tools and the complete set of books or CDs for the trip and that you have forgotten where they were stowed by the time you get home. In short, I am wishing you a boring a dull trip. There will be plenty of time for excitement in the future.

There was a really nice rest stop on I-40 in Amarillo. It is south of the highway and the truck stop where you could fuel, water and dump is on the north side at the same exit. It did, like many Texas rest areas, have free WiFi - too.

If you have been reading this group long you know that I hate to miss greeting a new owner with a paraphrase of the waterman's greeting to a new vessel or owner. So -

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Bob and family

Matt

Bob,
Congrats on the purchase and trust you will enjoy it as much as we do ours.
That is a really nice Coach. It may well have been ours if (big if) the original owner had brought it to Sirums a little earlier. I went all through that Coach a short time after I bought ours. Our Coach has the twins and dry side bath too and we love it.
