Hello Everyone,
Quick question about a steering issue I have:
After 2 months of sitting still in storage, my Birchaven has a sticky steering problem! When I turn the wheel to the right about 1/8 of the way, I encounter significant resistance in turning the wheel any further. Once I push through that resistance, it turns fine again. I checked the steering fluid, and the reservoir was low so I topped it off. May have been this way for awhile... Fluid level is correct now. I've turned the wheel back and forth dozens of times and the symptom persists.
Do I need all new fluid? Or perhaps it is the belt? The belt exhibits no whine as typical when alternator belt slips...
I believe the resistance occurs again once the steering wheel reaches a full 360 degree turn and approaches the 1/8 turn mark again. Also, the resistance is more pronounced when turning to the right than to the left. In fact, I believe turning left does not exhibit any stickiness now.

Your costant vel. bearing is corroded and need to be replaced on the
lower steering coupler.

Andre, sounds like the constant velocity U-joint in the steering shaft
located just above the steering box. Even with the boots on them if you do
not rtv the connector clamp, they will accumulate water and rust up.
Solution, take it off and clean it out and inspect it. re lube or replace as
necessary. When you reassemble, tighten the connector clamps securely and
seal around them with rtv. If the CV joint has seen better days, I think Jim
K has them in stock.

And for grease, be SURE you use one containing molybdenum sulfide
(MSO2), such as Valvoline Synpower. I had symptoms similar to yours
which were cured only with that type grease and have since known
several others to have similar results.

Ken,
Good advice (naturally) and I'd like to add a mod. Install a zerk in the top
flange of the CV joint and you can grease it regularly.
Rick Denny spotted that on Double Trouble and told me that was a great idea,
I confessed that was the way I got it. It was done by a PO or Ken Frey when
he got it ready for our first trip in the USA.
The Blue Streak doesn't have one installed, I will install one and take a
picture.

In the top of the CV joint in Double Trouble 8,585 miles (as the crow flies)
from Sydney. ;-)
