I'm thinking about running down to Titusville for the 3 Feb launch.

It would just be me in a Civic with my son (age two)

THe Nearby camgrounds are booked (what a surprise)

Can anyone suggest a practical approach to this? The launch is at 1:30 am.

Would it be realistic to find a cheap hotel or campground a few miles away, then drive in for the launch?

Anyone who already has a good spot want to barter photography? (i had to ask)

thanks

I'm jealous as all get out. I've never seen a launch.

I lived in Ca 81' thru 83' . Took three separate rented motorhome trips down to Edwards to see the initial shuttle landings. Got to see Columbia lands 3x and the last time, the Challenger take off mounted on the 747, they did a low fly by the crowd line, it was stunning.

In '96 I did a new years eve trip down to Orlando. Plan was to see the Challenger launch on my last day there, then hop on the auto train home. but they scrubbed the first launch . so I missed it because they wouldnt let me change my tickets. Two days later it blew up.

Couple years ago there was a launch at night which apparently would actually be visible from up here in PA because of the trajectory. I went outside after seeing it off the pad on TV, jumped in the car and headed out to a field close by. Sure as heck, I saw this bright orange light approaching up from the southern horizon, getting brighter and higher. I could definitly see the jet blasts flickering. Then suddenly it went out. main engine cutout after achieving orbit.

Saw the previous launch from St Augustine. Of course, the closer the better. If you end up with motel reservations make sure you have a lot of flexibility to reschedule. They just found more cracks in the main tank foam last week.

With this being the last of the shuttle flights there is a lot of
public interest in these flights. If you haven't already got a place
to stay then you are probably out of luck finding anything close,
probably in a 40 mile radius. We have spent the last 4 winters in
Titusville and we stayed at Manatee Hammock Campground and they have
limited short term camping as they have a high snowbird count. It is
just across the river from the launch site about 11 miles. Sorry that
I cannot suggest anything closer but you might consider getting a
place closer to Orlando and driving in to see the launch. Traffic
will be a PITA after the launch.

Hotels abound so there shouldn't be a problem.
One of the best places to watch a launch is the pier at Manatee hammock
park. Find a place to park outside the park and walk in towards the ocean.
The pier is seldom, if ever, crowded and offers an excellent view of the
launches.

How current is that information? Crowds have been increasing as the program winds down.

The 3 Feb date was annonced last week and Manatee Hammock campground is book including tent sites.

Is the park part of the campground?

Thanks

Be aware that the Manatee Hammock will not let non campers into the
park on launch dates, you must be a registered camper, they will ask
you to leave. Even though it is a county park too many cars were
parked on the roads and caused a safety issue that emergency vehicles
could not get thru the park. On night launches they do shut the gates
at 11 pm with a ranger checking for park registrations. I have stayed
at the park the last 4 winter seasons and these measures were started
last year. Last year it was pretty packed at the pier and open area
around the pier.

Sounds like the traffic may be very heavy this launch.

We were in Orlando in '06; realized there was a liftoff and two carloads of
us drove as fast as we could, as far as we could, using a GPS, to where we
had to stop due to all the traffic on a "causeway" off to the south of the
lift site. After driving about 40 minutes, we got there just in time to see
it fire up and blast away (could have been the one Rusty talked about). It
was spectacular. Unless they have changed things, you can probably get near
enough to be in the crowd. The BRIGHT lights let you know exactly where the
liftoff is taking place. All kinds of vehicles were parked in the esplanade
and along the sides of the highway. We had no trouble or delays going back
to the timeshare.

Go for it!
