My first post: "...it seems like everything works" I was looking at the glass half full! haha!

Hi everyone! Just picked up this 1977 GMC kingsley. I grabbed this for very CHEAP. I'm not sure the true value of this motorhome...any ideas? Bad advertising + uneducated seller = great deal for ME! Only 29,000 miles, interior in great condition with rear twin beds, full bath with shower stall; It's been sitting for a few years but it seems everything works, new tires and batteries but just some minor issues to work through. The Vin sequence is # 100001 which I'm assuming means it was the first 1977 produced. I bought it and put it straight into storage last week. I will be driving it 150 miles to bring it home to Vallejo next week... any advice for the first trip home? Thanks guys!

Okay so for anyone that has followed any of my posts over the past year knows I only paid $3000, but also that I had more than "minor issues". After $1300 in "get it home" repairs then the "minor" started: First of all it needed a New engine, new sewage tank, fresh water pump, new brakes all around, new shocks, and all those other small things associated with an engine overhaul. Then came "the list" New Alcoas and BFG Comm T/A's, repaint the bathroom, and a whole load of ther $hit that has been repressed from my memory but not my bank account. But guess what? I could not be HAPPIER! Laughing

Carlo,

I just read your note to Isabel (with a little dramatic license) and we both laughed and laughed!

When we bought ours the fellow said "runs great, no issues!". That was about $12,000 ago, but just like you two, we couldn't be happier! Yesterday we decided to try out the RV park Costanoa just south of Pescadero. It's the nicest KOA I've seen and very near the ocean.

Trip report? Runs great. No issues!

Larry,

I'm sure many of us have similar stories, actually... Some worse! I've gotta see if some of this is a tax write off! Hmmm...

As for your trip~ Enjoy the BIG storm headed to the California Coast! I'd love to be at the ocean watching the giant waves...

Only $12,000 later? Cheap by any measure. You must not be done yet.

Never lose hope! Hopefully the lowering of the air pressure helped your sway. We did most of the work, including replacement of the engine, which helped plug part of the bank account leak... and added tons of valuable knowledge to the memory bank.

Hahaha! Silly warm feeling! Yes I know what you mean... I'd rather tear up the Side yard landscaping and have her right next to me than to banish Carbon Footprint to a storage yard.

I was about 18, we got a new 13' Shasta camp trailer for Christmas. I was so excited I put a hitch on my 36 HP VW and towed it to the rest stop on the interstate about 5 miles from the house and camped overnight. Winter, Upstate New York, and a very poor furnace in the new rig. Froze, but loved it.

Hooked on RV's.

Has anyone seen a new owner sink, rather than swim? I've seen a couple post of people with money shortages take on a coach...even doing all the labor these things are not inexpensive. (obviously still less than a new RV payment)

Carlo,

Unfortunately we have had more than a few join the GMCnet over the last few years and then disappear. Some I suspect may have "drowned" under the problems and expense of GMC ownership. Others got frustrated very quickly by lots a little things, and some big ones, and sold out. There were a couple who thought GMC ownership was free -- not wanting to accept that any rv is a luxury (maybe not luxurious) but a discretionary expense and not an investment. One or two may have bought the GMC to flip -- and did so.

Most just drifted away, one left calling names and pointing his finger.

And, a couple that really liked the GMC but found it was not the right time in their life still frequent our forum and contribute.

I more often wonder about those who have owned the coach for a while and may now find the expense too great at a time when they might most enjoy the coach. Would be nice to able to help them -- and I expect perhaps we do -- lots of excellent advice, work rallies and even occassional free spares.

Another group are the ones who buy a coach and have big dreams about the changes (or repairs) they want to make. As they get started, they think: "As long as I got this apart to do "a," I might as well do "b." This leads them to try and do to much. Many have ended up with a gutted coach and big bills... without ever using the coach! They loose interest, let the coach set for a few years and sell the coach at a very big loss.

Sad to see. Both for the owner and the coach... seen nice coaches loose most of there value this way. (Like the Wallace coach.)

I -almost- always suggest get it safe, fairly reliable and usable and then USE it for a while. (Even IF "the wife" doesn't like the color!) Use it on short (time and distance) trips until you and your family gets and idea of how you want to use the coach.

After using it for a season or two... THEN make repairs, changes and improvements.

Mike,

My hand is up! Guilty as charged! Mea Culpa - Mea Culpa - Mea Maxima Culpa!

That's what happened to me with The Blue Streak! EXCEPT I haven't lost
interest, I just overwhelmed myself with it.

At least I learned from my mistake and didn't repeat it with Double Trouble!

Now that yall mention it, I have seen several gutted GMC coaches for sale over the years. I guess that is what happened. I am hesitant to remove too much at one time, Teri might lose interest. Very Happy I'd be in a world of hurt then. I scared myself when I tore out the kitchen to install the new furnace. We left Mo. with no kitchen, but we had heat. I want to do the headliner but just can not find what I want to use to replace this one. I like the carpeted headliner and it has held up good. Oh well, I can still sleep in it with no headliner.
Life is good living in an old GMC. Ran into a windshield guy today that wants to waive my deductable but I have none with Progressive. The "FOG" is getting wider.

Post Script,
I write down everything we do to this coach. I used to also put the dollar amount next to it. I stopped doing that last year. I am sure others have done the same.

Well we have had our 75 Eleganza for 4 months now, Have to keep it at the inlaws, we live in a condo. but they seem to enjoy my company 3 or 4 times a week when I HAVE to go to the MH to do some little thing.
I also have become a good customer of Allied GMC, it's 200 miles away but I've spent over12K just getting my "Really in Good Shape" (per PO) GMC dream machine in order.
Also one of the things Iam doing is updating the radio, I talked to a Vintage radio co. but they didn't have a record of which radio was put in the MH, anyone know what other gmc vehicle radio would be compatable?
Thanks, this is a great site.

Also one of the things Iam doing is updating the radio, I talked to a Vintage radio co. but they didn't have a record of which radio was put in the MH, anyone know what other gmc vehicle radio would be compatable?
Thanks, this is a great site.

If it were up to me I would cut out the existing radio opening to a rectangular hole and install a single din radio cd player such as you would find at walmart or just about anywhere. Keep in mind you will need to connect all the speakers with 2 separate wires . Your 75 has one wire feeding each speaker and the other is grounded.
