The most problems I have had on our GMCs has been with some of the
modifications I have made. Some earlier post about the extended A/T
dip stick reminded me of one of then. Many years ago I made my own
extended A/T out of 1/2' diameter electrical metal conduit using an
old band saw blade with the teeth ground off for the dip stick. I
was very careful about putting on the level indicator marks using the
old dip stick for reference with the A/T pan off. I had trouble
using it to find the oil level as some of you mentioned. I got level
readings all over the place which caused me to add to much oil and
venting oil into my vent line catch container. The next time I
changed the oil and had the pan off I did some checking and found out
my problem. When I installed the dip stick the rubbing friction
would cause it to be somewhat compressed as the line would be lying
against the outer curved surface of the tube. When I pulled on the
lower end of the dip stick it would extend about the same distance
as between the full and low marks on my OEM dip stick. Also, every
time I removed it and put it back in the indicated level change
somewhat. Manny told me to take the dam thing off and go back to the
OEM dip stick and start the engine up cold and remove the vacuum
module and let the oil drain until it stops then mark that level on
your dip stick and that is the correct full level. I did and I never
have to add any oil between changes.

I helped move a coach that had one of those remote trans dipsticks up front. We kept adding trans oil because it was reading very low. It kept blowing oil out all over the place. I finally called Manny and he had me do the same thing. When I pulled the vacuum modulator we must have dumped 2 quarts of oil on the ground in an old shopping center parking lot. Oil was everywhere. We never had any more problems on the rest of the 2000 mile trip with that coach.

I do not know what the owner did about the problem after we got it back. I know this experience changed my mind on the convenience of those remote trans dipsticks.

Other problems with the van type fill tube is the seal at the final
drive. I've seen quite a few torn and leaking to the point that the
owner lost the tranny from low on fluid. Even split tubes from the cv
bolts rubbing on the tube.
The owners had no idea and were blaming the pan for the loss of fluid.
When Clasco was in business, they had a set of fill braided tubes and
I got a set. The fit into the final drive is with an O-ring just like
in the original tranny dip stick. The ID is alot smaller than original
so it takes forever to add/fill but it least it doesn't leak.
