My wife's 2001 Towne & country has a disturbing vibration at cruise.

It resembles an out of balance tire but it's faster and it goes away when i take the load off, down hill or in neutral.

Trans is fairly new.

Vibration causes things to be blurry in the rearview mirror.

It's slowly getting worse since the last time I drove the car.

We are about to take a fairly long trip.

I would be grateful for some wil guesses

Thanks

I just had the same problems with my PT Cruzer. Car shuck all over. Replaced the front driver side wheel bearing. Still shuck. Checked front tires. .....they were delaminating and out of round. Took it out for a test drive. Couldn't feel anything on the steerin wheel but could feel a vibration in mt butt front the seat. We are getting closer. Put her back on the rack and checked out the rear tires. Same problem (coming apart) and one of the tires had a build date of Feb. 2010. Vibrations all gone.
Had the alignement checked (checked out within spec.

She now rides like new.

The vibration seemed to come and go. Then became constant.

Non GMC,

I had two front CV joints go out. One on an Audi and once on a Toyota.
Both times the noise/vibration manifested itself when turning. If the
noise/vibration occurred while turning right - it was the left CV joint.
Ditto for turning left.

My 2 cents.

Good Luck,

I really liked Mac's answer deliverd with such confidence. I'm halfway through swapping the axle. Need to go back for a bigger socket.

The tires are less than a year old. THe vibration has been there forever and just gotten incrementally worse.

The vibration is definately too fast to be a tire and it goes away completely when i coast.

I've had CV's go out on a few cars and it was always a click/knock while turning, but his makes sense also.

I'll know in another hour or so.

thanks

Years ago I had a VW GTI with the high performance Pirelli P6 tires. The VW
was lowered and had very stiff suspension & Koni struts & all the handling
mods of the time. My wife & I both drove like the Devil was closing in on us
from the rear. Those Pirelli tires always had a miserable vibration that
would shake the steering wheel. I tried different alignment specs & it
changed but never went away. I tried to get Pirelli to adjust the tires,
they looked at them and said they were within specs, and would do nothing
further. I pulled those suckers off and put on some European Continentals
that were rated for 120mph. Funny thing, all those wheel shake problems went
away. That GTI would handle like a bowling ball going down a mail chute
after that. That taught me to always suspect the tires first, and GMCs
aren't any different in that respect. Change out the fronts & see if the
problem goes away.

I'm sure they've remedied it by now and stopped the practice but I had so
much road noise and vibration in my new Dodge PU that I took it to my
favorite alignment place. They inquired what the symptoms were, asked what
vehicle, and when I told them, they said that was normal for Chrysler
products with Goodyear Vector tires. The only way to stop the racket and
vibration was to buy new tires. (these had less than 10,000 miles on
them.) Because of that and bundles of other problems with the vehicle, I
dumped it within 6 mos but I watched the next two model years and they
continued to use those tires. I would get alongside a CC vehicle and roll
the window down and listen and man, I can't believe what people put up with.
The alignment shop called it hundreds of "mini" tread separations. I've
used those guys in San Diego for 30 plus years and they have never been
wrong so I tend to believe what they say.

Steve,

The mechanic at the Chrysler dealership told me just about the same thing, only wasn't quite sure who had a replacement tire in my size. That and when they replace tires thru the parts dept., Good Year is who they contract with. Go figure.....

At least now I know what to look for.
