Just fixed and painted the original grill. The original springs that provided some flex for the grill are gone. I was thinking that before I break it again that I find the proper spring to use with the 10-32 bolts.

Anyone know the size of these springs?

thanks

I wondered about those, but the diameter looks too small for the original plastic grill.
The Murray is sleeping in a nice warm warehouse while the snow blows outside, so I can't get at it without bugging the warehouse owner.

I had posted this back in June 2000 so mine have been in for over 10 years now with no problems.

"My grill is not the original. It is a fiberglass replacement and I just drilled two holes in the lip of the top and tow at the bottom openings. They are 1/8" holes about 7-1/2" inches in from each opening side. I haven't had any problems with the holes and I've been across country twice with it.

If you have the cast plastic grille you might want to epoxy some small stainless steel washers over the holes to give added reinforcement. You can do this on the side of the lip away from the openings.

I used small "S" hooks in the holes to fasten the springs and also "S" hooks on the other end of the springs to snap onto the radiator supports."

I had also posted pictures to the old GMC photo site that is now defunct so I no longer have any pictures of this.
The springs are about 6 inches long (unstretched) and perhaps 5/16 or 3/8 diameter. You don't need too much tension to hold it in place.

Bruce,

Probably at Emory's suggestion, as below, I installed my grille with springs
only several years ago. I heartily recommend that method. No more pulled
out studs, and it's much quicker and easier to pop the grille out.

In my case I had a large collection of counterbalance springs salvaged when
I replaced the old windows in our home. I don't know how to describe their
tension to you -- unless you want me to use a scale or weight to measure the
deflection under a known load. I'd just buy some that "feel right". I used
six -- one at top and bottom of each end, and in the middle. Some are
attached to the condenser mounting brackets; others to the turnbuckle strut
between the headlight housings.

These were designed and made by Walt Halley, they work on all grills.
I'm happy to see that some people know our site.
