To repack rear wheel bearings or not? [message #108031] |

Well I was wondering since I am going to install new wheels later today, should I go to the trouble to repack the rear wheel bearings with grease? If so are there any tips for this procedure?

Shan,
If you don't know when they were done, do it. Just follow the manual's
procedure -- just like any old Detroit iron. But two biggies: 1. Be sure
you've got the right seals -- search the archives for the recent discussions
of bad ones being sold. 2. DO NOT over tighten the axle nut; the bearings
WILL fail if you do.

I did find the correct ones at AZ -- but be sure to check each and every one
of them with Rob's 1/4" gauge.
Personally, I examine the bearings for scoring, pitting, and discoloration.
Applying as much manual axial pressure as I can while rotating the bearing
in the dry race, I feel for any roughness.
If they look and feel good, I pack them carefully and reinstall them. I had
a new '59 Ford and a '62 Pontiac Bonneville SW that were hard on rear wheel
bearings. I don't remember ever replacing any others until I did so at 100K
on my '91 S-10 -- just 'cause.

Follow the recommendations in the service manual. When all else fails, read the manual. Part of standard maintenance. I did the front wheel bearings once for a customer and he drove the coach cross country to Key West, Fl. He got a bad wheel bearing fire but in the rear. Don't ignore them. Pay me now or pay me MORE later applies.

Phil,
I'm sorry but I'm going to disagree with you. The manuals were written over
THIRTY YEARS ago and the lubricants they had back then were not as good as
what exists now-a-days.
It says to Clean & Repack the RWB every 24,000 miles. I reckon with
Valvoline Synpower grease you could go well beyond that.

Repack them.
DO NOT USE MOBIL 1 grease.
Do not tighten them too much.
I recommend a grease with M02 in it like Valvoline SYNPOWER. If you can not find SynPower, Valvoline and others also make a non-synthetic MSO2 grease which could also be used. SynPower has a higher temperature rating.

What I saw there was not to use MOS2 grease in precision bearings. Wheels bearings and CV joints are hardly precision beatings. They liked Lithium grease in wheels bearings.
My John Deere tractor says to ONLY use MOS2 grease in all bearings and other grease joints. They will not warranty any part where other grease types are used. I do not know if the warranty is any big deal since nothinng ever wears out or breaks until the waarranty expires.
