The propane compartment goes deep into the coach. It would probably accomidate an 60 or 80 lb tank.

I don't happen to have one. What I do have is a dual tank regulator and quck diconnect from a travel trailer.

I kinda like the whole setup versus a fixed tank. I have a reserve switch to avoid surprises, i can buy LP by the gallon when available but I can also swap out the BLue Rhino anywhere.

But I never assume something is a good idea just because it makes sense to me.

Is there any potential problem with this setup?

Any problem laying BBQ bottles on their side?

Thanks

You cannot use propane from a normally upright bottle laying on its side. You would draw liquid propane rather than vapor. Also, with the modern bottles they use a float and a 80% valve that would not open the valve if its laying on its side.

Where are you located? I know someone that has a large GMC propane tank for sale here in Santa Fe. I believe they are asking $75.

Thanks.

I have a perfectly nice 45-pounder. I just liked the two bottle system for the reasons i mentioned.

Too bad it won't work.

As Emery said, you cannot lay the BBQ bottles on their side. However they did make side mounted bottles at one time and some RV's were equipped with them. The problem is that they use the old stile valves and no new stile were ever made so they could not be converted. They were grandfathered in, but almost no one knows that and you have to convince anyone to fill them, or get a copy of the regulations and wipe them in the nose of the fill people. Some Airstreams had horizontal bottles and this has been a constant problem for the owners of their rigs.

I don't think the changeover wold be easy (to find the bottles) or worthwhile, and you could not exchange them in the manner you would like.

I think I recall that someone here had retrofitted conventional upright bottles to their compartment, and had photos. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

1. Due to quantities made, 20lb propane tanks are about the cheapest tanks, per gallon. But as others have said, modern BBQ tanks will not work laying on the side.

2. They make 20lb tanks that are designed to "lay down." One application of these tanks is for forklifts. Terry Skinner has one mounted between the generator and the rear of his coach. These tanks normally cost more...

3. You can pick up horizontal tanks (fixed) removed from other motorhomes for cheap. Some with fittings on the end, some on the side. They are normally larger than you may need...

4. I have seen remodels done to accommodate a "two 20lb tank" setup (like many travel trailers) in a rear compartment.

I use RV bottles when we are parked for a while, like now. Have a line that screws right onto the bottles. Never have to move the GMC for gas. I like it.

I think the type bottle you are talking about using
is not legal for use in a motorhome in some states.
There are tunnels that it is illegal to drive through
with one of those bottles. Not really sure I know
what I'm talking about so you do need to check
into that. Also the bottle will not work on its side .
If you did get anything out it would be liquid. That
doesn't work.

I have something like this on my 1973:
<http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/lp-gas/50525.htm>

I also like the idea. BUT I had problems with poor quality fittings in the kits I have found around here.

Fin Bevin has a fiberglass propane tank originally intended for a hot air
balloon & was being used for forklift tanks. He said they were the lightest

This is what I did, installed under one of the twin beds. This compartment is not OEM so there is probably more height in my compartment.

This is probably the tank that you're talking about.

Be a bit careful you know what this tank is and it's intended use and so on. It is listed as "liquid withdrawal" and you do NOT want that on your normal propane regulator.

G'day,
When we bought our GMC it had no gas. As tanks for "house" use are illegal here, we found two 4.5 kilo BBQ bottles fit well, easy to change and refill.
