If it really does go away after a little while ( 5 seconds? 30 seconds?) after
starting, I would just write it off as an annoyance and try to forget about it
as being one of those things that's not worth fixing. 35 year old machines have
those sometimes, just like 70 year old people (there's this slight pain in my
knee....).

No it goes away, but not in 30 seconds. I'll have to gather more info. Sometimes I dont hear it at all. It does go away, but I think if Im correct after a few mins when it does happen.

Radio,

If it does not always evidence itself, then it is probably a lifter (hydraulic lash adjuster).

If it really takes a couple of minutes to pump up when it does get bled down, that is one seriously sick lash adjuster or you have very poor lube oil flow to that part of the gallery.

It is intermittent because the lash adjuster only bleeds down when it is off the base circle of the cam and that base circle is 3/4 of the cam.

As long as you don't load the engine before the valves get quiet, you will not do much harm.

By the by, your chances of locating the bad lifter are about squat. I know, I tried on a couple of occasions. The best way is to cold start the engine with the cylinder head covers removed. If you hear it, feel all the rockers and one will have a snap in its motion. If you don't hear it or feel it, shut down and try again in 8~12 hours (really).

Good Luck

Matt
