I got a call from Dan a couple of hours ago. They drove over to Lordsburg and parked it at the KOA. Everything seems to be working fine. What a great couple. Not sure if they have the internet so I wanted to let their Canadian friends know where they are tonight. They are a bit unsure of their plans for the next 2-3 days.
I was reading the Daily Pose and saw Manny's picture there. I was thinking about him all day long. He builds a fine product and I can almost feel his presence everytime our transmission shifts. He makes these available to us through the Jims for a very resonable price. Even if one needs it shipped they are a bargain.
Probably everyone carries a spare governor but just in case you don't, call Jim and get one. Could be a good idea to have a drill too, which I never gave any thought to. Must pick up a cheap drill to carry along.

Rob, I did mean the gear, sorry about that. A governor would be good if you can find one. Also, I use Black and Decker drills.

Jim,

I was based in Hong Kong from 1990 t0 1999. In 1991 I learned of the
Guangzhou Trade Fair I decided to go see what it was all about. When I got
there I discovered that manufacturers from all over China would bring the
products they wanted to sell to show. I attended each year subsequent to
that and the one thing I noticed was that slowly but surely the quality of
the items they were selling would improve. I don't think the Chinese will
get to the Japanese standard but they have learned that the higher the
quality the higher the price. Once the next generation (who never lived
under communist rule) takes over it will get even better.

It is a plastic, very hard, that goes on the bottom of the governor. I should have put a picture of one that was not broken on my blog last night. Just did not think about it. Jim K. Sells them. Small and easy to carry. If you can not get out of first gear sometime that will likely be your problem.
Dan
PS,
thanks for getting the weather right before Teri and I arrived in Az.

Sure doesn't look like a part I'd know where it was, how or when it needed to be replaced! Thanks for the link!!!!

Michael,

Here's a picture of the gear:

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/721

Here's where it fits into the bottom of the transmission governor:

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/1024

It drives the governor and the speedometer cable.

If it breaks the trans doesn't shift.

As the first picture notes - "Always carry a spare."
