Hi, I just pulled the OEM intake manifold and turkey tray in prep for the new aluminum manifold and Howell FI. I've never seen such a disgusting mess in an engine. Caked on baked oil on the bottom of the manifold and both sides of the turkey tray. Lumps of burnt crusty solids laying in the lifter valley. I'm pretty sure my engine has not been opened before. Going to install a roller tip rocker kit as well. Just spoke with Jim K about finding a connector to join the two speedo cable pieces together as I'm dumping the OEM cruise control. If anyone needs the box let me know. Nice to know JimK mans the phones 24/7.

Thanks

Gary, you don't need a connector if you have exhaust manifolds. Just connect the cable that goes to the speedometer directly to the transmission. If you have headers routing it around the exhaust may be a problem. I don't really know.

Using a good quality oil does make a difference. Here is what mine looked like after 30 years and 78,000 miles.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=17731&cat=4521

This engine always had shell Rotella dino oil in it since it was new in 1976. It only had two POs and the second one only drove it from California to Illinois once so he really does not count. All maintenance records show only Shell Rotella. Also the paint on the intake manifold bolts was not marred or broken indicating they were never removed. I installed blocking plates, cleaned, and painted the manifold prior to re-installation.

Once you get that new manifold with blocking plates installed, you should not have any more carbonized oil build up on the bottom of the new one.
