Read in a previous thread that Mobil one grease did not hold up
well in some installation, (not sure which).
Presently installing new steering shaft boots and the recommended grease is Mobil 1.
Is there a consensus on a grease to use on all of our fittings or do some applications require different products.
Going to wait for suggestions before proceeding, will try to finish the Innovate LC-1 install this morning.
Thanks

Richard,

IIRC the general consensus here on the steering cv joint is moly grease such
as Valvoline Synpower or Valvoline Durablend. The Synpower is fully
synthetic and has a better (slightly wider) temperature range which wouldn't
make any difference in the area you're servicing.

The key ingredient is moly disulfide. Both the Valvoline greases have it.
Mobil 1 does not. I know from personal experience* that Mobil 1 will allow
the steering CV joint to bind, while moly-fortified Synpower will prevent
that binding.

Regarding temperature ratings, Mobil1 is rated at something like 250
degrees, Valvoline Durablend at something like 350 degrees, and Valvoline
Synpower at 450 degrees. That is not relevant to the steering shaft, but it
shows that the emulsion in Synpower is a bit tougher.

* Ken Henderson got his opportunity to sit in a lawn chair and watch me cuss
at my coach at a rally several years ago, when I was struggling with binding
Mobil1 on the steering CV joint. I'd had a scary drive down there with the
steering column binding up unpleasantly, requiring 150% attention at all
times. After messing with it for a while, he said, "When are you young'uns
gonna learn to LISTEN" and drove me to a parts store, walked me over to the
grease section, put a tub of Synpower in my hands, and said, "Buy this."

Richard,

The nice thing about Valvoline Synpower is that you can use it on everything
on the GMC! You don't need any other grease!

BTW the only place I could find Synpower was at NAPA. The O'Reilly, Advance,
AutoZone, and Car Quest stores I stopped in didn't stock it. They had
Durablend but not the Synpower. That may only be at the local shops here in
Humble, Texas and the surrounding area.

Royal purple UPG is also excellent grease, they use it on bullet trains in Asia to keep the thrust bearings in the driveline from eating itself up.

Thanks again, found the "right stuff" at NAPA just as you suggested
bought all they had left (7 tubes) less than $7.00 a tube.
Finished the Boot replacement about 30 minutes ago.
For a time there, I had some doubt that I could finish it, very tight space to work, but followed the very good instructions that Curtiss included.
Now onto the LC-1, waiting for the Bogie Greasers from Applied.

Richard, there are a couple of things to think about when installing the
boot. One is that water can leak in, but it can't leak out, and the boot
will retain it. It leaks in through the slot in the portion of the upper CV
joint that clamps onto the steering column spline. Fill up that slot with
silicone gasket sealer.

Some have made shields to prevent water from coming in at the top of the
hatch and dripping onto the middle steering column.

If sealing up the top seems dicy, you might consider a small drain hole near
the bottom of the boot. You don't want water to collect inside that boot.
Ask me how I know.

Water will go wherever it wants to go!

I always consider that probably the best
protection is to give it an easy way to
get out once it gets in!

Thanks, I believe I will try sealing he "U" coupling, this Boot kit includes the lower as well as the upper and they are a tight fit. Have not yet experienced water coming in thru the two access panels although I can see it is possible. Will keep my eyes open.

Mobil 1 grease almost cost me a wife.  It separated into some low viscosity stuff and other stuff.  The more fluid stuff leaked out of my grease gun all over the gun and carpet.  It flowed like water.  What a mess!  I bought a new grease gun and Valvoline after that experience.

When I put my steering boots on, I used some grease Burt Curtis handed me.  It was thick and messy.  I do not think that stuff would separate or drain out.

I wouldn't think that it would be the Mobil 1 's fault that you stored your grease gun on top of the carpet; however, perhaps you should just send Mobil a letter, explain the problem, and ask them to replace your carpeting. Be sure to let us all know your results.

I was once a Mobile 1 fan and then noticed the "phase" separation problem between the high and low viscosity "phases". This is most noticible in the gun mode. Perhaps in joints where it is mixed by use it might be OK but our coaches sit so much this seems contrary to logic. I've gone to Synpower.

so i am about to finish off the installation of The Pigs front suspension and the last link is the steering box to cv slip shaft. The slip shaft and cv are clean and bare. I searched up this thread to lead me to the best grease for this application. I live in seattle where we get lots of rain and remember much chatter about water washing grease out of this location. It appears from this thread that Synpower is preferred. My local options for grease is either Mobile 1 full synthetic or durablend. What say ya all?

Sully, I used to use Mobil One Synthetic but did not like the way that it
separates. Synpower does not seem to do that, and is is a bit cheaper where
I shop. Can't go wrong either way.

I also like Stnpower for this location. It comes in cans. I have found it at Autizone. Advance Auto and O' Riellys also probably have it.
