Howdy All,

Question for you all. How do I know when the (Olds 455) harmonic balancer timing mark is off? I've recently timed my Revcon (Hi Dave) and am curious to know how to tell if it's correct or not.

Did I read anywhere that if the mark fluctuates it's time to replace the balancer?

Thanks.

Scott

Take a look at this photo and the photos before and after it:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=5570&cat=3527

Notice that the slot/keyway where it mounts to the shaft lines up exactly with the center of the large hole, the slash mark on the inner piece, the slash mark on the outer piece, and also the timing mark on the outside circumference.

If these are not all in line then you have a bad / slipped balancer.

If your balancer is not maked in this matter there is another way to get
there from here. First though, if your timing is fluctuating, that could be
a sign of a worn distributer and also a sloppy timing chain, both common in
high mileage engines.
Find a stop you can put in the number one spark plug hole. Rotate the
engine by hand until the piston slightly contacts the stop. Mark the
balancer. Rotate the engine in the other direction until the piston contact
the stop, mark the balancer. Your timing mark should be dead center between
these two marks.

You have the information that you need now to figure it out. I just wanted to say that I had to replace one on the road. That sucker was all over the place. There was no way the timing light would work. When Wally and I got it off, the keyway in the balancer was all wallered out. Had Autozone get me one shipped in and replaced it. Was at the rally in Iowa.

Dan: sounds like someone forgot torque the big bolt on the end of the crank?

Roy, that might have been the problem. I had about 15k on the engine rebuild. There was no doubt about torque on the new one.

Dan; "all wallered out" must be a Mozeery phrase...is it like the hogs were "wallering around in the mud hole" ???

Bob, you have been around me a lot and should know the lingo by now. I really did not think about that being a local phrase, ha.
Oh, my cousins bought the new picker. Teri and I are officially unemployed here next Fall. May head to Tx. and see about work.
